what causes dropped frames/pixelation?

I had something weird the other day watching back some footage i shot over a month ago.

these renctangular sections appeared and 'pixeled' out for a second. I pressed stop(I was using a Canon ZR for a deck) and rewound. When I played it back it was okay.

Never saw it before. The rectangular things horizontal.

Is that considered a dropped frame?

It may have been something on the tape or deck head. Possibly dust. If it only happened once that probably means it was not recorded on the tape which is great for you. If it happens again, try cleaning the deck head. If it continues to happen, it may be your tape. Hope this helps.
