what camera to climb with...

Got a tough decision to make...going to a very wet, windy, cold and lonely environment, shooting a doc with people climbing a big wall!
Seeking for a camera, to bring up with the climb. It has to be small, sometimes one handed operation, good image (preferable aspect ratio 16x9), 3ccd, XLR sound. To make a steady shot, hanging in the ropes, I was looking for using a DVcaddie or something like that.

Thinking of Panasonic dvc30, Sony pdx10 or Canon Xm2. Use it also for shots in the basecamp with a tripod. Battery Pack is important. DVVX 100?

Re: what camera to climb with...

I do some climbing here in Switzerland, but I have never used my dvx100 to film some of it. I have used the pdx10 of a friend, it's a nice small camera, with the 16x9. It's not very light sensitive, but produce some nice pictures.

But from many reccent reviews the dvc30 seems a better camera, which produce better pictures.

But since the weather is probably going to be bad, I would look at the most sturdiest camera. Maybe it's the sony, and look at the gears you can get to protect it against the rain....

Can't tell the details now...but its in Patagonia.

A sturdy design is needed, I think the dvc30 brings up a nice picture and is small enough to sleep with at night. It is just not that 16x9 ratio the pdx10 imitates a better one. The climb is not that high like in the Alps but it is granite stone and steep and long.

Re: what camera to climb with...

there is a report on the web from a german guy who went with DVX100 and DC30 to the himalaya.

he used the DVX down (at 50i) but ended up using the DC30 when it got tricky and very high due to weight. apprently the 50i image of the DC30 is great for its size.

there is also an even smaller Panasonic out now with 3CCD which a friend of mine uses as second cam on snowboardshoots. also good imagequality and only costs around 900 euros.

Hi, I cant find it, do you have the adress ?

Re: what camera to climb with...

Yes, can you give us the link. I have tried to find informations about it too, without success.

Xray, you may want to see what kind of protective gear you can get for the camera you want to use. For the dvx100, you can get from porta brace a rain slicker or a Polar Mitten Heated Camcorder Case.

The first one will protect your camera from the rain and bad weeather. The Polar one will protect against bad weather too and you can put Heat packs in it to keep your camera and your hands warm.

The link about the rains slicker in B&H is:

I have ordered a few days aga the rain slicker, it's supposed to arrive at my location today. I've got it because I would like to take my dvx out in the mountains this winter and get a little bit of protection.

Re: what camera to climb with...

Thanks Alex, nice to hear you like the mountains, its easy for you living in the Swiss... [Wink] You are absolutely right with the rain-gear.
I can find them for the Sony pdx10 but not yet for the pana dvc30. There is a kata coat for the canon gl2 maybe it fits.

I did not make a decision yet, but in the next week. I would like to take the dvx up but I think it is a hustle. I like 16:9 ratio for design and future use compatibility and doubt about dvc30 or sony pdx10 now.
It has to be light and easy to handle with one hand and on automatic as good as manual.
