What camera is better then the HVX200a?

I recently have been running into many conversations about cameras... People say this camera or that camera is better then the HVX200a. I clearly understand any RED cameras are better. I suppose the conversations have been directed towards the HVX200a compared to the Canon 7D or Canon 5D. I understand that it all can come down to your clients budgets & what not. I am more so talking about personal use. (for fun) Is it even comparable? If it is, why? and Does any camera like the HVX200a compare to any in it's own category?

Thanks,

The HPX 170 is "better" TO ME. Other than that it all boils down to your needs and wants. The 200a is still a viable cam and turn out some great images. If you can afford to Rent or Buy RED do it. Great Cam but it has it's drawbacks and advantages just like a 7D, T2i, GH1, HMC40 Etc. Etc.

The HPX370 is a much better camera, by specification, at barely double the price. 10-bit AVC-Intra and all the I/O that is missing from the HVX200 are features I'd point to for starters.

It depends on your application, though. For a filmmaker, you could handily go with a GH1 or 5dii and get much more "film-like" visual results. The codec isn't nearly as good as the HPX300/370's, but you simply cannot easily get the lens-sensor interaction on the 300 that you can on the less expensive DSLR. It's a trade-off.

"better" is always relative. There are many ways that an HVX200A is "better" than a Red One (price being first and foremost, then size, battery life, recording time duration, ENG use, etc).

There is no such thing as overall "better", there's only "better for a given purpose."

for fun I shoot with my friends digital elf camera. lightweight, small, and worry free.
it all depends on what your trying to do and how you use your camera

i'll be yet another to say its a matter of horses for courses.
it all depends on the kind of work you do, how you like to do it and how much money you want to spend.

for the money, i personally dont think you'll find a better OVERALL camera than the hvx200a/hpx170

yes, DSLRs benefit from the DOF/interchangeable lens thing.
BUT that comes at the cost of standard audio I/O and a host of wonky ergonomics, etc...

the sony EX line has its good points. better light performance being key
BUT the rolling shutter makes it a non-starter for me.

then there are the variety of cameras that shoot "HDV" some of them look good on paper
BUT i personally DESPISE working with the HDV format.

these are just MY opinions. and other people will have a whole other set of criteria based on their own expectations...
people are doing GREAT work with the 200a (and even the 200) and will be for quite some time.

HOWEVER, based on the links youve shown us of the work YOU want to do. i would suggest you look into a DSLR. its just the cheapest and most straightforward way to get what YOU are looking for. it doesnt sound like you will be doing a lot of ENG or corporate work, so some of what i may consider a weak point of a DSLR may not bother you at all...
