What boom mic would you recommend for me?

I'm looking for a Boom Mic that would be good for filming short films inside or outside. My price range is $200-$400. Also what boom pole would be the best to get?? I'd like a carbon fiber pole unless its too expensive. But, please tell me what you would recommend! I'm filming on a Canon XH-A1s.

Thanks!!!!!

P.S. Would the Sennheiser ME66 Super-Cardioid Shotgun Condenser Mic be good? It's $199 at Samy's Camera.

The Sennheiser M66 is a good shotgun and I would recommend it but keep in mind the $199 is not the entire mic that is just the capsule you also need a K6 or K6P power module which is another $240.

Thats one for and now from me, 1 against. The ME66 is not like its more expensive sisters.

This post would be better in the audio section, ask one of the mods to move it for you.

If $400 was my budget, Id probably hunt for used.

wait, power module? can't it be powered via Phantom power on the Canon XH-A1s?
i should just need the capsule, a wind screen and 1 or 2 XLR cables, a short and a long

audio technica 4073a. Great Mic for the price. Less noisy than the me66 and has a more full tone. I think they run about 550$ or $600 for a kit.

hmm i like it, i may try to pick that up on father's day at Samy's Camera, since they have that no tax thing =]. Thanks!

Great advice or should I say "sound" advice. Otherwise the forum headers lose any meaning.
Might also check the "search this thread" tool when you get to the audio forum. Lots of great info in there.

yeah i know. it took me a bit to decide on where to put this. I kept thinking of Audio as something in post. =/

And i did search.

If you are willing to go as high as $600, you might want to look at this kit:

The NTG-2 is a very nice shotgun for the money. The NTG-3 rivals the Sennheiser 416, but that mic alone is $600, so there is no kit within your budget.
and that shotgun would be good for short films? seems like a very nice kit. thanks!
how long you think that will be available at that price?

It will be just fine for short films. Actually, should be perfect for your needs. That said, a shotgun mic is a notoriously poor choice for interiors. For that, you'll need a hypercardioid such as the Oktava MK012, AT 4053a, or AKG Blueline CK93. But that's another $300-600.

Should stay at that price. If/when you call DVEStore to order the kit, let them know that you're a DVXUser member.

I have that same kit from dvestore.com. Pretty good, not the best for inside though. For that, a hyper cardioid would be better. The oktava MK-012a is pretty popular from what ive read.

i like this kit. but i may be filming inside a lot. if I were to just get a mic that is good for inside, would it be bad for outside?

what would be a good mic for inside?

also, the NTG-2, can it be Phantom powered? or can every XLR mic be powered by phantom power, lol?

would that give me more of a discount? or give points to DVXUser? i'll definitely do it either way =]

The general rule is shotguns outside and hypercardioids inside. But rules are meant to be broken. In this case, here are two of the exceptions to the rule:

- Some shotguns, like the Sennheiser 416 and the Rode NTG-3, do have response patterns that allow them to function well for interiors.
- There are some exterior scenarios where a hypercardioid is a better choice over a shotgun due to reflective surfaces.

There are hypercardioids in a broad range of price points, but for the budget-minded, look at:

Oktava MK012
Audio Technica 4053a
AKG Blueline CK93

The NTG-2 can be phantom-powered or powered from a AA battery. The NTG-1 is the phantom-only version (no battery compartment). But not every XLR mic can be phantom powered, only condenser mics. And at that, only condensers that are wired to accept phantom. Most condensers do take phantom, but you need to check manufacturer specs to be sure.

Not sure... there are some things that he does give a DVXUser discount on, but I can't promise what's on that list nowadays.

wow these some of these mics are so small o.o lol

the Oktava MK012 andt the AKG Blueline CK93 seem to have good prices.

would the AT875R be a good mic for inside?
