What best shutter settings for exporting stills?

Will do some snowboarding footage (bright snow) with a small Panasonic MiniDV PV-GS36. (wouldn’t want my DVX to take a snowbath;).

Don’t care if the footage is jittery when played as video – just want to get tons of sharp still frames I can cull a few good ones from on Final Cut.

So we’re talking lots of motion blur in individual frames if shooting in the default 60i 60fps.

I can adjust everything manually.

I’m thinking widest aperture at F1.8

So the questions is, what is a good shutter speed so there is no blur in the individual frames but it's not too dark?

Range is 1/60 – 1/8000

Thank you.

Outdoors in the snow, your exposure might be around F16 at 1/60 shutter. A good target F stop range would be from F2.8 to F4, so four or five stops under F16. So, you might use a shutter in the range of 1/1000 to 1/2000 and still get a good exposure.

One problem I see is that your stills won't be so great, since the camera your are planning to use is interlaced. You're going to have to deinterlace and that's going to seriously hit your resolution and sharpness. What's wrong with a digital still camera (or does the GS39 have still capabilities)?

i'd use the fastest shutter speed you can afford given the light conditions, as your first concern will be to avoid mice teeth caused by the interlacing.

if your target is to get good photos, i'd go with a proper digicam. so much more resolution/contrast/sharpness and creative options.
but i understand you might have some other purpose in mind.
