What are your computer specs for cs5?

I'm buying a new editing system for myself as well at the end of this week. Here are the specs:

Two 2.66Ghz Six Core Intel Xeon
12GB (6x2GB) RAM
4x 1TB 7200
Windows 7 64 bit
Bluray BR-RW
PNY Nvidia Quadro 4000
Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel)

Does this configuration sound acceptable? I'll be editing on Premiere CS5, mostly EX1 and 7D footage.
Up till this point I've been editing SD footage in Premiere CS3. The goal with this system is that I can
edit HD footage with the same speed I've been use to with SD. Thoughts?

It's interesting the ratio of Mac to PC users running Premiere CS5. I count 8-5 in favour of PC.

I continue to go back and forth with my decision. I've worked in a PC environment for years and would like
to avoid the learning curve of switching platforms. However, I hire a lot of freelancers and students and
(at least in Toronto, Canada) they all seem to be on Macs.

The company (Mac and PC authorized) who is selling me my new computer highly recommended the
above system as the most bang for the buck. A comparable Mac is about $2,000 more.

Work flow question: If I hire a freelancer who's editing with Premiere CS5 on a Mac, and I'm on a PC, can I work
with their project files? Is their any compatibility between platforms using CS5?

I don't know, maybe I'm the odd man out here, but I'm a cheap SOB and bought a refurbished dual core emachine from tiger direct for under $350 delivered several months ago and the thing kicks some serious butt with CS5 and the hack. I also run AE as well. I've had zero problems and performance has been pretty decent. The only thing I did was upgrade the video card to a GT240 1GB DDR3... but I'm going to the DDR5 version shortly to tweak out a tad more performance with the hack. I also added the AzenX Blitztorm cooler which really helps quite a bit after a couple of hours of editing. I'm extremely pleased with how the system performs. In any event, my system is:

Win 7 64 bit
AMD Athlon II X2 250
6GB RAM
750 GB hard drive

I was a decade-long PC user who eventually switched to MAC. It's not all THAT different, but upon landing my first job as a TV editor it was clear that there was a big bias toward MAC within the industry. So… without judging the reasons for that bias I embarked on learning the MAC platform and, honestly, actually liked it better. Now I wouldn't even consider buying a windows machine, despite the price advantage.

As for your question on PproCS5 MAC/WIN compatibility - you should be OK in that area. The only real disadvantage of using Premiere on Windows is lack of ability to export ProRes files (which is a MAC-centric codec, and also needs Final Cut Pro installed). At my TV studio we swear by ProRes but your needs may be different.

PS: I'm in Toronto too ;)

Good info on the specs... I'm in the same boat... New Camera, need to upgrade to CS5, therefore need new 64bit workstation.

One thing I'm NOT seeing in the systems is how you all are monitoring HD 1080p... (pahrelia, Matrox, Blackmagic, etc.)

What are you using to monitor?

Thanks for any guidance.

My plan is to monitor using the Apple LED Cinema Display (27" flat panel).

The system configuration I'm considering would have two of them, one to edit,
one to monitor. Its resolution is 1920x1080 native, the same as my Canon 7D.

Thanks to TFG for the advice on cross-platform compatibility. The knowledge that
I can have have freelance editors work on part of a project on a Mac with CS5,
then open their project files on my PC running CS5, made the decision an easy one.

The purchase order goes in Monday. Can't wait!

Just checked the specs on the Apple Cinema Display and it's 2560 x 1440 not 1920x1080.

Doesn't matter for my purposes. More resolution can't be a bad thing :)

I Guess I wasn't making myself clear... my question wasn't so much about the physical monitor itself, but rather what are you driving it with ... IE what HARDWARE on the COMPUTER are you plugging it into...
Matrox... BlackMagic... extra graphics card... etc...
Thanks so much for any input.

Antec Tower
Cosair 1000w
GByte X58 Mobo
Intel core i7 980X 3.33
24GB DDR3 1600
2.5GB Nvidia Quadro 5000
4 x WD Caviar 1TB ( raid )
240GB CSSD work drive
Creative Titanium XiFi soundcard
Win7 Pro 64bit

This is my new machine designed to last me a good few years. I use CS5 Master Collection. I have not found any issues in terms of speed or processing power.
Also updated my Laptop to use CS5 on the road

17in ADK 9000 Proaudio Nbook
8GB Ram
Intel core i7 960 3.2
Raid 1Tb (2x 500gb 7200)
Nvidia GT285M (Hacked)
Win7 Pro 64bit

I moved from Vegas Pro 9 and a 3 year old desk top and sony Vaio and the difference is pretty profound, but so it should be for the outlay for these two.

I'd guess just dual monitors from a single graphics card. Basically all graphics cards have at least 2 outputs on them nowadays, just throw the reference window over to the second monitor and work that way.

Dell Studio XPS Vudeo Card Upgrade issue

Dell Studio XPS Vudeo Card Upgrade issue

In a Dell Studio XPS 435MT chassis/mobo
7 64 Pro
i7 920 (can't OC without getting a new board and case, which I'm thinking about doing)
24GB DDR3
GTX 460 (modded text file, so Pr recognizes it); had to mod the case to allow proper cooling for the card
120GB SSD
several TBs of regular drives

Can you send me some pics and more advice on how to upgrade the card for that pc. I bought an evga 460gtx once and had to return it because it kept overheating and shutting down the pc. Help man

GFX: Dual GTX 470's
