What are you listening to now ?

John Bonham: "We've done four already but now we're steady. And then they went: One, two, three, four"

What a count in. What a drummer. What a band...

Yes, The Ocean is a great tune! Zep is at the top of the bands I love. Buried within this thread, are several links to their songs I've posted.

Here is another. :)

Oh yeah, nothing quite like Kashmir! Love Bonzo's drums through the phase shifter, and JPJ's keyboards with a (rotary, of course) phone on top! Ha ha!
I'll always regret not taking advantage of the opportunity I had to see them at (the then record-breaking show) Tampa Stadium in '73...

@Alan Black:

"Never Enough" Featuring Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band & Take 6 "

Love the rhythm. That chunky bass cooks. Sounds like a Riki and looks like it might be a newer model. I'm only familiar with the old B&W, 4000 series I guess (posted pic)...(I'm not a bass player btw though.)

Anyone know what the bass used in the video is? If it's a fender Jazz with a pick I'll throw some egg on my face. Sounds nice though.

//edit: Well, he's not using a pick and it looks like a Fender. Wow. Nice bass playing.

//Awesome performance from everyone. Thanks for the post Alan.

Cool Gordo yeah it's all good, don't know what bass it is.

But a few of us here are right into all the BPBands stuff, dig the arrangements.

I've got 2 copies of every release, one for the car. A couple of his CDs have the music on Side A and a DVD of the session on Side B, first I've ever seen.
Tommy Vicari their engineer is just great, my mixing style to a tee, of course he works with some of the worlds best players, just a fantasic drum sound.

Gordon G has a site, there used to be a forum, but I guess he's too busy to run it now.

http://www.bigphatband.com/ For anyone in range of Studio City, they're live June 8 .. http://www.bigphatband.com/june-8-2012/gordon_060812-3

About due for another new CD too.

Cheers.

Well Alan, I do thank you for introducing me to that band. That is impressive.

As regards to the riki, I've had a couple drafts but you can see it here in action, although the highs are clipped out of the mix. If you know what a riki sounds like. (aka early Rush.) A lot of upper harmonics. Very naturally chunky sound. Can't hear it here though but you can see it in action.

//They kind of got into a train wreck there towards the end of the solo ...:) It's all good.

Okaaay Gordo and thanks for that link, yep all good.

I asked Gordon G to pass on our thanks to Tommy V for his mixing, but GG says he might ask for more money :)
They spend hours fixing every tiny clam, but yeah the rhythm really sets it all up.

Another great outfit we all gravitate to here is the Bob Minzter band.

He has the same following and while I don't think the studio engineering is quite as clever, his arrangements most certainly are.
Here's a link to a live shot, the questionable audio comes via this guys camera mic, but it's all there, he plays tenor too ..

What I like about these guys is the valuable time they devote to young musicians, god bless 'em all ..

Alan: I grew up listening to a lot of Tommy Dorsey. I still have a lot of his old sheet music books here that my dad bought when he was younger. I never played Jazz myself but maybe a bit of big band in an accordian orchestra when I was a kid. ;)

Tommy Dorsey.

//But then came Elvis, Fats Domino, The Ink Spots and then the Beatles. Then...that was it. Rock and roll. haha.

What other kind of music do you like Alan?

I like anything if it's done well.

Or anyyone else.

Hi Gordo, well anything by Miles Davis, except Bitches Brew, it tastes terrible to me .. right from 'Birth of the Cool' through to 'Kinda Blue.'

All analogue, all acoustic, straight up no digital fixups, great days.

Cheers.
