What are the CORRECT Frame Rates on the GH1?

I recently got my GH1 and am in the process of figuring out the best workflow for editing. Because this camera shoots 1080/P24 but the files are stored in a 1080/60i envelope and Reverse Telecine is needed to convert the footage from 60i to 24P for editing, this is actually a nightmare.

Anyway, so far I tried NeoScene (it sucks unlike what everyone syas all I get is interlacing artifacts while the files generated are so ridiculously big its stupid), I also tried VoltaicHD 2 which kind'a works and also tried TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress that I don't seem to get a correct setting for proper 24P output.

Well, the matter of the fact is that all files generated from NeoScene and VoltaicHD are actually NOT 24fps but 23.98fps. Is this right? And if so when editing, do I output the project as 24P or 23.98 Progressive?

This is all such a flippin nightmare... gosh I miss DV... one system, one format, one thing, one Standard... it all just worked, not to mention fast... these days, the faster computers get the slower and more never-ending complex the editing process gets... this is all so ridiculous... one day, back to film... splicer and tape... that's the way to cut things!

I'm tempted to try it but worried it will fry my new GH1 and not take future stock firmware updates from Panasonic...

Ahhh OK, great then, thanks for the info!

My only question is when exporting my movie, I have options for 24p and also 23.976fps Progressive. What should I choose ideally?

Currently my workflow is shoot, convert to 24p with VoltaicHD (usually to WMV which is what gives me better image quality at high bitrates) and then I edit in Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 because its the one running faster and with the best workflow for me, plus it handles AVCHD natively really well.

If its just basic trimming or sometimes for final Mastering and clean-up (Noise Reduction, resize, etc.) I use TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress which is positively one of the most fabulous video apps ever written.

I find it highly unlikely that Neoscene produces such articfacts as I use it alle the time and so do many others and no one complains.
Are you sure you´ve set it up correctly in the pref menu? FullHD Clips need to be De-Interlaced and SH Clips converted (keeping original frame rate). Also the quality setting there should be set to high.

I use a couple of those programs without issue. I don't think your problem is the program.. :)

I would point out that Panasonic had 24p and 24pa (23.976), for the DVX100, to allow DV to handle that frame rate, and became rather popular with many people...

I've not been able to use NeoScene, as when I tried a few months ago, the program continually crashed when I started it. I've downloaded the most recent version, but have not had the time to check it out again.

also - 23.98 (23.976) IS 24p.
It's just terminology- when talking about NTSC video standards ....
24 fps = 23.98, 30 fps = 29.97, 60fps = 59.94

yes you're right - cinema tools does- I guess it depends on your required delivery. If you're going to film out, then this would be necessary-yes?

OK so I made the plunge and actually installed the modded firmware that enables higer bitrate and direct 24p recording, ITS AMAZING!!!

This this is night and day, no mroe conversions needed, the image is breathtaking. One word of caution you will loose the English Menus totally, all gets reverted to Japanese no matter the language chosen.. I can live with it...

Forget about more conversions and all this crap.
...its like having a whole new camera... results are incredible.. Ill shoot some stuff tomorrow and post some videos:)

I never really understood why people hate to do pulldown removal. I don't find it a bother what-so-ever.

no, Tester13 and everyone have been trying to keep the off-topic stuff to a minimum. They recently asked many times to make secondary threads for questions that are not related to testing the *specific* things that Tester13 is asking for. I'd make your own thread stating the problem and I'm sure Tester13 or someone will attempt to help you there. At least that's what I'm guessing since one of the mods stated that they would start to delete posts that don't have specific relevance.
 
The posts get deleted because that thread isn't for questions and answers, as Isaac has been pointing out. Those issues are to be handled in different threads. It has nothing to do with "liking" anyone, it has to do with simply reading what the moderators have posted.
 
Hey, it's not personal we've been finding that the more questions go in that thread that the slower progress is made and the harder it is to find information on proper settings. Just keep questions separate from the testing thread and everyone will try and chip in to answer them.

I just use compressor to remove pulldown. The files are always gonna be big once you transcode, but storage is cheap, and this has nothing to do with pulldown it's true on everything.

Anyway, as for DV it was not one system, etc. The DVX shoots 24p on DV using a pulldown, the HV20 uses HDV and has a pulldown, etc.

your absolutely right though....and let's not the forget dropped frames, and endless hours of capturing in REAL-TIME....(blahhhh)-mixing tape stocks-dirty heads, not having the ability to quickly and easily review/delete clips.....

I don't miss those things-

I do however miss timecode, the feel of a camcorder, and the small file sizes
 
Well, plus "DV" meant 24p, 24pA, 30p, and 60i, plus PAL DV, plus DVCAM and DVCPRO (which meant 4:1:1 in PAL when every other PAL system was 4:2:0)... plus you had to take every one of those variants and then double it because it could be either 4:3 or 16:9...
