What are the advantages of the Anamorphic Adapter?

I am trying to research the Panasonic AG-LA7200 anamorphic adapter and really all I want is a reason to get it. I am eager to add some additional accessories to my camera and I don't want to just throw $$ away.

So, if there is anyone that can tell me a little more about this adapter I would appreciate it. Also, if anyone know a site that has pics video captured with and without the adapter, that would also be helpful.

thanks,
Epp

I bougth the adapter to get a widescreen format which seems more cinematic to me (although for many years the standard movie format had been 4:3)

The 16:9 TV sets are more common every day mainly in Europe, where I live.

If you want to transfer your footage to film the 16:9 screen is nearly the same as the screen used in the movies.

I like the widescreen look.

Remember that using the adapter brings out some disadvantages you must be aware of.

One thing that the Anamorphic Adapter does is allow for full resolution of the camera. If you were to use the "Squeeze mode", you would have 25% of the frame unused.

A good place to find out about such things is Barry Green's book, The DVX Book along with the DVD that comes with it. I think you can find it available on this website.

I have used both with good results. It really depends on what your audience is, as well as what you are trying to achieve.

Good Luck!

I told you in the PM, but I wanted to be sure and let everyone know that it takes a little practice to get the focus right with the adaptor. With the book you can get flawless focus, but it takes some trial and error.

If you put some time in a study and do test shooting with the adaptor, then it will be a big advantage to your product.

One big misconception people have is they just screw on the adaptor and get instant widescreen, film clarity picture and that is not the case. Just like in real film work, you must light and take the time to set up your shots properly. Nothing is simply, especially trying to get light and composition just right.... and I can't stress this enough in video work.

Lighting and exposure is key... plain and simple...

questions about problems and difficulties with anamorphic adaptor

questions about problems and difficulties with anamorphic adaptor

i love the idea of what this adaptor can achieve, maintaining the full resolution of the dvx but what are the main drawbacks, or problems it has? first- can it be mounted along with a wide angle lens, or any other, that has 72mm threads on the front? and is it very difficult to alter the footage, turning from 4:3 into the 16:9 format after it's captured? and in the LCD and eyepiece is the image warped, as in stretched vertically; and if so has anyone had experience with this and had trouble setting the frame properly because of the changed look? sorry, a lot of questions; but i really want to try and learn these things the easy way- before i go out and spend all the money and potentially want to return it. thanks a lot to anyone who knows this stuff

To use the adapter you have to keep in mind some points:

Your freedom of choosing any iris aperture is limited because you have to use a minimum aperture in order to get proper focus. (You'll have to work with small apertures depending on the focal distance and focal point)

Yo will not be able to mount any filter unless you buy the only matte box that suits this camera (Chrosziel)

I find no problem when framing. I know that the image is vertically the same one and I only have to notice that more image is getting in the horizontal axe.

There're some products (Century Optics) which allow you to unsqueeze the image but I think they are too expensive for something we can do by eye.
