What am I doing wrong?

OK, took the plunge. Installed snow leopard and final cut 7. I did it on a freshly formatted disk and did a complete clean install. Installed final cut studio 3 and did all software updates. My XDCAM EX 1080/24 clips play back for a second then stutter between a couple of frames. Final cut seems buggy at best. Doesn't snap into external video mode. Seems sluggish overall. I thought maybe I had a corrupt install so I did it over again. Same deal. I was able to run final cut 7 on leopard with no problems.. Any ideas?

what computer are you using, ram graphics card etc?

id like to hear some feedback from others also. im on a 8 core 2.93ghz decked out but not comfortable about upgrading to SL yet.

sorry...

mac pro 8 core 2.8ghz 6gb ram was running leopard fine. just read that snow leopard was rendering faster...

is anyone here running sl and fcp with any success?

To answer your first question: Vaguely naming your thread.

thanks. you're a big help...

otherwise, i can't seem to find any answers. i'm not maxing out on my activity monitor. it seems like another case of apple glitchy os syndrome... should have known. oh well i guess i will try later on when they have done a few updates. apple has really gotten crappy about this the last few years. almost as bad as windows. time for someone to start making computers that work like apple used to do..

Not trying to be too big a smart ass Cheez - it's just that if people can see your problem at a glance they are more likely to look into it if it's their area of expertise.

As for Snow Leopard - I make it a rule to never change OS before one or two updates. I'm just getting to Leopard, and only because things I want won't run on previous OS. If you don't need the new OS it's best to lay back and let the go-getters run down the bugs.

sure. i usually have this same policy, but between a couple of guys here that said they were getting fast results, frustration with my current performance, and the need to douche the old o.s. i decided to try it. i guess apple has done it again. remember when computers were their #1 priority and gadgets were an afterthought? now it seems that the opposite is true. it's frustrating because i don't see a better alternative. if someone has the answer, i'm listening...

Unfortunately I don't have any answers but I do feel the same way about SL. I did a fresh install on my MacBook Pro and naturally expected it to be good as new if not better. Overall I find the OS to be slightly on the slugish side. FCS3 does run alright however. I don't have any complaints about its performance.

However, I do have serious complaints about encoding. I do mostly mpeg2 encoding for DVDs. It is way faster, nearly twice as fast. But the quality it pretty bad. I used to do only 1-pass CBR and would put as much as 120 min on a single layer disc and the results were acceptable. Now that it's so much faster I do 2-pass VBR and often experience blockiness.

Not to hijack this thread (it seems to be somewhat relevant), but is anyone else having a similar experience?

Dr King. Maybe I should start a new thread, but first I'll mention this DVD encode prob I experienced. I'm only on 10.4.11 on an 8 Core MacPro.

I shot about 80 min of interview footage at 1080/30p on my EX1. Captured fine. Edit slightly, color correct, and encode one large full quality file at 1080/30p. Looks fine. I go to compressor and encode a MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-Pass & a Dolby Digital Pro 2.0 audio at 192kbps. I usually put these into a DVD Studio Pro project.

About 10-15 min into the file I start getting a blockyness. It happens in a pulse like clear/blocky/clear/blocky/clear, switching every half second and lasting for a few minutes. This happens 2 or 3 times throughout the 80 minutes.

I tried making another master file at 720/30p. Same thing on Mpeg-2 encode.

Made a short file (720/30p) at the exact place where the blockyness occurrs, then encode for DVD and it doesn't happen. It seems that the long length of the file has something to do with the blockyness. It's VERY annoying because I need to make a DVD of these interviews for a client, and the method I use usually results in the best looking 16x9 image to DVD, coming from EX1 footage. Like I said, it isn't happening for me on shorter encodes.

Sorry to hijack - DrKing is the first to mention this. Is what I described happening for you? You can PM me.

Have you tried to transfer files into Apple ProRes? I'm sorry if my question is too ignorant. I actually use Windows with Primiere Pro CS4, but I do have a few friends who use FCP.

Another way around it might be getting the CineForm plugin that transcodes to an intermediate codec.

Hope I helped.
