What about the Cineporter HDD for the HVX?

¡Hola!

I ask it to Andrew Hoffman personally and he answered me to get up-to-date info on the CinePorter CP-2 @there (same link). And concerning the pricing that has not been set on any of the options, however, they will be competitive with the firestore and the P2 cards.

Release dates haven't been released either.

They're pleased keep checking in with them for progress and finally he said they welcome any input.

Hope it helps.

<PS> BTW off-topic, Madrid is one of my home's places. So, you live next to me. And congrats regarding your FX-1 + G35 work! [I'm a fan here and @other places, as maybe you well know.]

A Panasonic freelance booth guy (who really seemed to know his stuff) told me that the Spec-Comm wouldn't record 720P-Native either so you wouldn't get the storage efficiency the way the P2 media does when recording 720/24P. Is that true?

Rush from EVS told me that the P2 slot overheats when you try to attach a drive structure to it. They will hopefully be able to fix that with the cineporter. If it does go via the PCMCIA slot, it should record to every format that the P2 cards can.

I heard from 3 techs at DVexpo, and 2 HDD mfg companies, that the card slot overheats and causes damage to the camera. That is why Focus Enhancements stopped pursuing that solution, and went with firewire instead. They figured a 20% loss in capacity is better than losing all the footage and damaging the camera (yup, P2 slot gets damaged).

that sucks. looked like a really nice alternative. I dig the P2 card idea. The prices and swapping back and forth still make it really difficult. 2 128gig card would be soooo awesome. Who knows.... 4 years from now. Anyhow, firestore is probably the most appealing to everyone. myself included.

I thought is was stated that with two P2 cards you could get continuous recording by just removing the full card and download its content with the other continues to record, then replace it and remove the other one when its full and keep repeating. Wouldn't this also cause the P2 slots to over heat?

If it overheats because one slot is being used constantly and never being given a chance to cool down, then what if the interface to the external HD had a two card interface, swapping between cards just like a human swapper would do?

Just a thought.

Also, if it is just a time limit on recording to P2 before it goes into temperature extremes, what would be the size limit on the P2 card that could be used. 16GB, 32GB, 64GB...? If long form recording to P2 is an issue then that really needs to be looked at real close for future P2 card sizes.

I couldn't tell you theoretically why the card slot doesn't overheat with P2 cards, but only when a cable is connected to the HDD. I can only hypothesize that it has something to do with the proximity of the cards to the data provider. The electrical signal has to travel so much less distance to reach the P2 card, as opposed to an HDD 8 inches away. This would require less energy output from the camera, creating less heat. Also I am sure that the P2 cards' bandwidth of 640mbps doesn't hurt either, since the cards are only operating at 17% of their available throughput.

Sounds like they need to design the P2 card adaptor to external HD with a heat pipe mechanism to draw the heat out of the P2 slots.

That is a great idea john, just like the computer heat pipe tech for drawing away from processors. If they can wrap the cable with that safely, or run one along the cable, that may be good enough.
