What about 90 degree viewfinders?

Well? What about these things?

These are 90 degree attachments to the viewfinder of a camera that allow you to get low angle shots etc. The canon brand one costs like 150 bucks or something but generic ones are super cheap. I am not sure if the one above fits the 5d ii but there are many that do.

This makes me very excited. I searched for it after seeing a post on cinema5d from a guy who had both a LCD viewfinder type thing, AND this. To me that seems like the ultimate solution. Especially to run and gun shooters. It is super portable and you can now shoot low angle shots etc. I fail to see what would be wrong with this since the actual viewfinder on the 5dii is just as good or better than any other DSLR's viewfinder, and considering that almost all pro still photographers use only the viewfinder, it must be pretty good.

So, why haven't these caught on?

The Viewfinder does not work during live view.

It works on the GH1 though. I tried one out At Samys but never bought. Will be buying one when my gh1 comes.

Oh no! Really!?! so there is no way to use the viewfinder when recording? Wait a minute, I thought I had read something on phillip bloom's site about using the actual viewfinder to record before he go his Z-finder.

Strip out the internals of your camera, remove the flip up mirror and replace it with a beamsplitter - lots of work, not too cheap, you blow your warranty, and you lose some light sensitivity.

When you activate LiveView you are flipping up the mirror so the light goes to the sensor and not the viewfinder. This is how a normal film SLR works.

You could use the device you link to in the following way:

Look through the device, compose the shot through the viewfinder, then activate LiveView and hit record.

So it would work as a frame composition tool for low shots, it's just that when you record you see noting through it.

If you want an amazing 90 finder get the top off a bronica 67 camera

I have one in the office and the look through it is wonderful

I have not actually tried physically mounting it though because that camera (the bronny) is not mine to bust up
