What a Great Camera!

Picked up our rental EX-1 on Friday in Atlanta and are returning it to the dealer and purchasing a new EX-1 tomorrow. My wife and I have been filming (nature DVDs and local cable broadcasting) with PD170s for years...we didn't feel that quality HD was in the cards for us at our humble economic level...until now!

Shot some mountain stream footage on the way home and immediately plugged the camera's component cable into our Denon AVR-4306 receiver which sent the signal HDMI to our Hitachi 720P front projector and onto our 106" screen in our home theater.

Good. God.

We got our new Mac Pro last week, and the same footage played back on the 23" Cinema Display/Matrox MXO playback monitor is beyond belief.

A couple of minor quibbles. The "focus assist" button is insanely hard to use, and pushing the record button takes so much force that the camera shakes on the tripod. But these are indeed minor compared to what this thing can do.

I know most of you have been in HD for some time now but for us this weekend has been nothing short of a revelation. All our future releases will be in Blu Ray!

I feel as though I've been genuinely inspired to get back out there and get great footage again. What an amazing camera!

I feel ya. I'm getting mine in a few months. Can't freaking wait. I bet you like that manual lens.... :)

It's great. Except in the harshest light I was able to focus with the LCD. The expanded focus button was much used and was a great help.

I've never really been in love with my footage before...well, maybe right after getting my first VX1000 (very soon after it came out). I now feel like I've joined the 21st Century.

All this for $6500. Hooray for technology...

The footage from the EX1 is inspiring. Even my wife says it (the EX1) makes her look younger. She got inspired last night and she put on a dress that she only wore on stage in an international fashion show several years ago. I captured her movements at 24/60fps, resulting in a nice slow motion effect.
That 720P Windows Media file is available on YouSendIt for a week. Here's the link to the 15MB file, if anyone is interested in seeing this clip:

That footage looks grainy basspig. Did you have any gain switched on? I know the slow-mo will have probably taken you down a stop and down to 720p.

I had the gain at 0dB. It doesn't look graiiny to me, at least not the master footage. Windows Media may have introduced some compression artifacts that look like grain. I thought the footage looked great, at least compared to what I was getting with the V1U under the same conditions.
