What a bad day...

For the "scratches" to show up in the footage, the lens has to be pretty badly damaged; and I find it also hard to believe this could be caused by a soft rub with a microfiber cloth, unless that cloth had been used previously to dust off something abrasive.

I tried taking it to a local camera shop. They were pretty huge poo poo-heads and didn't want to help at all.

I totally feel lost right now. I've never felt so sick.

Actually, I use compressed air to dust off my camera like twice a week, and it's runnin' awesome with 400+ hours on it :)

dusting off the outside might be fine, but using it inside the camera (on the lens or in the tape compartment) is a no no...you can end up spraying mo' dust in there at a high velocity

Oh, by the way, some microfiber cloths aren't LINT FREE and they leave some lint behind; this would show up as tiny "marks" about 1/32" long.

gary - do you have an extended warranty for your camera (Mack or RepairTech or whatever)?

if so there should be a local affiliate that can examine your camera as based on your warranty...probably won't cover all costs as this is not a monufacturing issue, but it might be a good starting place...just a thought

No extended warranty. (Like a fool, I didn't purchase it.)

I wish I knew how it will get better. Because right now I have a scratched lens and no way to repair it. I don't have $1800 and I won't have it any time soon, if at all. My new career choice is certainly off to a rockin' start!

i'm gonna come off like a scumbag for writing this, but maybe you just sell the thing on ebay, buy another and be done with it...i'll bet you'd get a good price on it with superlow hours - whether you mention the "scratch" or not...

but i'm an asshole...

Ok, I don't get it. If it's not on the footage, it's not on the footage. Sure, you might loose some definition, but for standard video, I doubt you'll need it. Just an advice for future problems, use a hand blower (not canned air) before rubbing anything on the lens, that way you won't be scrubbing particles aggainst the lens coating.

If it's a deep scrach I'd be worried, but if it's just a mark, I wouldn't sweat it. Chances are nobody will ever notice it.

So I took some footage minus the filter - with the huge speck of glitter or metal (or whatever it was) on the lens and...

I can't see anything. For such a huge piece of WHATEVER - it sure isn't showing up. Weird.

I guess I'll probably just get a replacement filter - clean the lens as gently as possible and use it whether the lens is scratched or not. Here's hoping it won't show up or be noticable. (Though it will eat away at my very soul every time I use it just know it has scratches.)

LOUD EXPLETIVES!!!!!!!!!!

its all good homie...

and dude, if you can't see it on the footage and its really bothering you that much...just sell it and get a new one....especially if it doesn't affect the image....just my .02

Don't worry, be happy...:cheesy:

You'll drive yourself crazy if you're not careful. If you can't see it... it doesn't matter.

Well my day is sucking pretty hard right now.
I quit my cushy, well-paying job to do videography full-time.

Gary......why in the world would you quit your "cushy, well-paying job to do videography full time"? I mean......like......well......uhh....... You've been asking a lot of pretty basic knowledge questions in the various forums here and it's just my opinion but it seems like you should have waited until you had a better handle on the use of the camera you bought. And for a full time job......you should at least have 1 backup camera. Well, anyway.....good luck dude.

Apparently, you've never worked in IT.

If I had stayed any longer I probably would've killed myself. :-D

Well you didn't say that. I quit a "cushy" corporate photography positon because it was going to literatly kill me (spent a lot of time shooting from helicopters) and I went freelance, but I had a very good handle on my career with a lot of clients waiting. I also knew my equipment like the back of my hand and I had a great inventory. I've been self employed now for over 20 years and I can tell you that it's a tough life, but rewarding. The last thing I would have ever needed were any sort of questions regarding the use of my equipment, as that was the least of my problems. Running the business is a whole different ballgame if you've never done that before.

Do what you need to do to keep yourself sane......but don't think that becoming self employed is going to be easy, unless you got yourself a salaried job from a production company.

I do wish you luck and I hope you are very successful.

BTW.....I moved to Arizona about 14 years ago. Since I travel to various locations to work, I could choose to live anywhere. I picked Arizona because I could play more in the winter months when I work the least. I also chose Apache Junction because it seemed so rural and quaint.......hmmmm......Not anymore, so it may be time to move again.

Right now I'm just working on shorts for the most part - though I have a few ideas for documentaries.

I've also got some work I'm supposed to do for some friends. (Assuming I'll have a camera to use.)

Mr. The Llama,
I really have to tell you this straight, for you're own good: there's NOTHING wrong with your cam!
You'd be amazed what this cam can take. It has been used and abused by MANY on here in all sorts of horrible situations....it's been dropped, subjected to salt water, heat, humidity, cold, amazing g-forces, vibrations, etc, etc., and meanwhile turning out stunning results.
Some tiny scratches on the lens won't even bother this cam one iota, I tell you.

In fact, I think your cam is secretly enjoying that you are so upset about it. It's probably just LOVING the attention, but believe me, it is NOT effected by any means in its performance to deliver.

Now take a good night's rest...and shoot something nice in the morning.
