What 5D MkII 30p really means to filmmaking...

I haven't read all the posts but I think this should be looked at from outside a filmakers perspective.

Agreed.

The video mode on this camera is not meant to be for a real production. It's a still photographers tool nothing more.

Just like a spinning/vibrating optically degrading ground glass adapter with photo lenses is made for "real production". It's all about getting around limitations for a desired aesthetic.

It can be used to capture a bride on her wedding day to include with a DVD of pictures but anything that requires real color correcting or editing is going to fall apart with this codec.

Right. The codec that's employed in the 5D MKII has a higher bitrate than the EX1's HQ mode, and no one seems to be complaining about the image falling apart from CC or editing with that camera.

Not all codecs are created equal, but if this camera's video has a bitrate that's much higher than HDV, plus a more efficient codec and a much cleaner image, well that all points to a superior output...all things being equal. (which they never are)

Wow, I can't believe I ever talked this way about the 5D II. I mean I still agree that it wasn't designed for the filmaker in mind and was just a feature that was added to benefit still photographers but the codec image quality is great especially since most of us don't edit in the native format.

It still brought up a whole list of challenges (moire, audio, not being able to throw on any lens and expect great optical quality, form factor, HD monitoring, convincing canon to release 24p and manual control, etc.) Amazing what filmmakers will put up with to achieve a full frame DOF at nice price point (self included).

Agreed, this zombie thread was completely entertaining... everyone was either blown away or in denial! Ian, way to see the future dude :) I thought I could see a little light bulb above your head in that first post.

I knew from the announcement of the 5D II that I would never buy a video camera. (I didn't do video before it, just stills) Now here I am, using the same camera used to film television shows to help my friend do an English project. (I'm in 11th grade) I like knowing that I will probably never outgrow this camera.
