Hello,
sorry for my non-knowledge in nikon lenses, but im a bit lost and ask for some advices.

i have a d5000 with the 18-105 zoom kit
playing a bit with it i realize the lens isnt exactly what i want for shooting video.
i also have an old prime nikkor 35mm 2.8.
i find it way better for my taste, shame its not VR, but yea, way more faster.
the problem is i can only get live view on M mode, not on A or S or P.

i now would like to get a 50mm with aperture ring of course
but im lost, i have no idea what to search for.
what model would do good on the d5000, with what model i would be able to film with M, A, S and P mode ?

i have no idea what are the different kind of lenses out there, AI, AIS, G, D, S, AF, AFS, what are those anyway? anyone got a link, a descriptions of those different models ?

thanks for your help.

The 50mm 1.8 is a very affordable lens that will work great except you will lose the ability to auto-focus it on the D5000. If you wish to pay a little bit more money you can get the 50mm 1.4 which will auto-focus on the D5000.

I guess it just matters on your budget.

I'm with rocksteady. But specifically go second hand:

Get yourself the SECOND iteration of the first generation AF Nikkor 1.8. The obvious difference between the first iteration and the second is the stippled rubber grip (the second) vs the hard plastic ridge grip (the first). Note that optical quality is the same, but the second iteration is easier to focus due to the grip.

depending on availability, you could pick this lens up for US$50 or even less. It is among the sharpest lenses Nikon have ever made (sharper than the f1.4), and is probably the best lens bargain there is. It is light, bright, and excellent and unless you need to do something 'tricky' you will not need another lens.

ok
thank you all for your advices.
i dont really care about auto-focus, as even with the lens kit i focus manually.
but about metering
ok i found the page i was talking about: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm

on the table there i see AF, AF-D, AF-S, AF-I will meter
AF and AF-D wont auto-focus on the d5000 but on the d90

now yea that 1.8 new lens seems like a good deal to me, or like damonb saida second hand is a bit more what i was searching for.
so i guess i will search for an AF 1.8
