What 4x4 ND filters to buy?

Hi Team,
I'm going to be purchasing some ND filters for my mattebox, and wanted to know which ND filter levels will give me additional flexibility to comliment the existing 1/8 and 1/64 filters in the camera.

Anybody have experience with this? I'd like to get maybe 2 ND filters. One that will work well in between 1/8 and 1/64 and one for above 1/64. Thoughts?

More than just plain exposure are the ND Grads. .3,.6,.9 for dealing with bringing sky and foreground in closer approximation.

There's not a whole lot to ND's. Without getting into f-stops and everything, my Tiffen 3-ND set is (basically) 2,4 and 8. In other words: somewhat dark, dark and darker.

You can stack them, or not..... You can use them in cojunction with your in-camera ND's or don't. It doesn't really matter since there's no color shift.

As you're aware, every situation is different so each set-up is entirely unique. Add to that any shutter speeds you might be experimenting with and you just have to swap them out and see where you want your iris at.

Grads are great and all but we move set-ups fast enough that they can become a drag. How often are you really wide with the sky presenting a problem? Could be just something else to clutter up the camera bag.

That and $5 will get you a Starbuck's......

Speaking of skies, my avatar photo (to the left here) was taken with a circular polarizer but that's a whole other thread and debate altogether.

Id consider moreso than anything an ND grad.

Hey guys, Thanks for the input. I'm going to get an ND 3 and an ND 6. I want to use them so that I can shoot at around f2.8 as much as possible.

I used to use ND grads with 35mm, and yes they are awesome, I'll get some down the road. I like the idea of using the 4x5's for extra control as well--- cool!
