What’s in your sound package?

Alex that’s a work of art. Very well done. A small item in my sound kit I really like is the Viviana beetle modular lav concealer:

I feel the lav mounting options have improved so much in the last 5 years it really has helped streamline that precarious process. I must add I like the physical mounts way more than any double sided tape options.

I haven't tried the moleskin extreme, but it seems like a very handy item.

I've been using small, transparent clamshell cases very similar to what you have. It packs nice and tight. Everything else seems so bulky.

I made a microphone roll, like a tool roll, out of neoprene. It's two layers of 1/8" neoprene sewn at intervals to form a tight pocket for microphones. Very good padding and packs compactly. Drawback, it's sometimes hard to get the microphone out.

Last, I’ve been on the search for a better way to organize my lavalier mics. I’ve had the Orca OR-29 clamshell cases, but they’re a bit bulky and on’y hold three lavs per case. I finally found what I had been looking for: plastic business card cases. $12/dozen on Amazon. 3.7” x 2.5” x 0.5”. They work perfectly...

Those boxes look nice. I'm still using some tiny pill boxes that I found at The Container Store. Lav on one side, mounts & concealers etc on the other. For my mostly bag work on docs and smaller corp gigs where I only have a couple extra lav mics on me (plus a couple TX pre-rigged, and more in a case), this works out pretty well. About US$5 each. Note that there are some cheaper ones on Amazon etc, but not all are as well made IME.

Also, you can get the same (good quality) box from Lectrosonics... Same street price and easier to find at Lectro dealers (ie- it isn't a profit center for Lectro)...

Also, Alex, your black lav to non-black lav ratio is higher than mine. IOW, I end up using beige, grey, and white lavs kind of regularly. Black's still the main go- to... But do you ever want more non-black lavs? I'm guessing the answer is no, or you'd have more... But any thoughts?

Nice find on the pill boxes!

My current plan, as I have a few empty business card cases in there, is to fill the empty spots with beige, white, and cocoa. Mostly. I’ll probably add 2-3 more black DPA 4060s, but then a few of the other colors. DPAs are my new go-to, so that’s where I’m focusing new lav purchases.

I don’t find myself needing the non-black lavs often enough to need too many, but I don’t have as many as I’d like at this point. I do have white B3s that I’ve used on occasion, but so much of my competition/reality work hasn’t needed more than the standard, black COS-11D.

What is your attraction to the 4060? I know it is popular, but it seems big. I've never seen one in-person.

It’s the same size as the Countryman B3 (the Ursa Mini Mount and Bubblebee Lav Concealer for B3 are also for the 4060). The 6060 is smaller, but also more expensive.

I love the sound of the 4060, and that’s the attraction. It’s more open and clear, but with a balanced and rich response.

I’ve got two of them deployed today on puppeteers, using Ursa head straps, and they sound exceptionally good. They’re going to mix with the MKH 8060 beautifully in post.

Many moons ago Gotham Sound set up a sound booth and hooked up around 6 lavs to compare. To my ear, the DPA’s sounded way better than anything else. They made the COS-11’s sound thin and tinny by comparison (sorry if those aren’t great descriptions).

Of course matching a lav to a voice is important, and I’ve wondered in hindsight if my sheriff would sound better with the COS-11 as he has a deep voice and is sometimes a bit hard to understand and the DPA’s seem to have more bass, where the COS-11’s have more treble.

If size is an issue they make the 6060 series. Amazing mics, so tiny. I like the microdot system too, even if I’m all TA5 at this point.

I've tried a dead-cheap Xvive L2 lav. It's a tiny little bugger. Much smaller than COS. Probably comparable to the 6060. For sound and noise level, it compares well to the COS. It has a scary-thin cable, which is nice to help hide things. I've only used it once, but it mixed well against the COS. I can't remember the sensitivity, but it was ok. I've been tempted to do a pull test and abuse it a bit to see if it holds up.

Audio Technica shotgun mic, a few Amazon 1 dollar lavs, Zoom H1, a broken Tascam DR 40, a broken Azden SGM 1x, and a boom pole.

Spent all day today, and will be out all day tomorrow, on a follow doc. Decided just to grab the Sanken CS-M1 and go wireless for the boom. I’m constantly amazed at the performance of this little mic. I chose it because we were going to be moving between interiors and exteriors throughout the day, and I wasn’t necessarily going to have the time to swap mics. It’s held up through everything today, and I’ll be taking it back out tomorrow.

My Lectro HMa weighs more than the mic, suspension, and windjammer. Still, it’s a pretty light rig at the end of a 12’ pole.
