WFN Original Series 'Pesca' shot on FS700

Just thought I'd share a TV show, Pesca, that I DP'd that is premiering this Sunday. It's only on the World Fishing Network.

The first episode had some C300 mixed in as the B-camera and the show's title sequence has some random stock footage (aerials mostly), and I didn't get to work on a few episodes in the middle of the season due to a scheduling conflict, but for the most part I was the DP on the majority of the season and it was shot handheld on two FS700s in SLOG2. We pretty much didn't light or use tripods on anything except for some quick stylized title shots.

I believe they mostly used Vision Color Impulz LUTs for color grading based on my suggestion.

No 7Q, all internal AVCHD. Didn't break out the 7Q for this one, there wasn't a need or budget for it, this one was very quick and on the fly in cramped boats and kitchens so the FS700 handheld, bare with no accessories worked best.

Shot handheld and in AVCHD... Fabulous. From a viewer standpoint, I really enjoyed the segment about the Highline. Great work! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Noah-
Curious as to what your handheld setup was, even without the 7Q the fs700 is a bear to shoot with all day. Still struggling to figure out how to mount my 7Q and have it flexible without breaking the bank at this point on a cam that has a few years under it's belt....
Thanks

Noah, just did the first ep. really great work brotha. How many cams in total? and very curious what Pulldownclaw asked as well.

Great looking footage, i'm surprised it's AVCHD. Congrats, Noah. Also curious how the handheld went for you.

Recently, i replaced the side grip on the FS700 with a simple rubber grip handle from Small Rig. It's just want i needed to handle the camera without going to a shoulder rig. So simple but adds a lot of stability, i can just grab the thing and go.

A lot of it was 2 cameras, though a couple segments were just me on one camera (highline, barchetta opening, some interviews etc), and as I mentioned the B-camera just for the first episode was a C300 because that was what was available, though the stuff that made it in from the B-camera was mostly closeup details and some of the shots from the camera boat (you can see he tries to keep me out of the frame since I'm on the picture boat).

No special handheld rig, just camera with standard side and top handle, never with the eyepiece. Just exposing mostly with zebras and histogram and focusing with lots of expanded focus and making sure in broad daylight the LCD backlight is set to BRIGHT. I've gotten very comfortable with operating either in a side stance with the camera on my left shoulder, or forward stance with the camera on my right shoulder. I also sometimes operate with the camera cradled in either side or forward stance when I need a lower angle or need to gain some distance in a small space. I've really gotten comfortable with the camera and I actually like that I can hold it in many different ways to get the shot that I want even with limited space. When I just need the shot sometimes I'll even hold the camera way in front of me over the side of the boat to get a shot since in fishing the subjects are frequently pushed right up against the side of the boat and looking out at the water, so any other shot from the picture boat is of their backs, but that usually gets tiring by about a minute. This also wasn't the kind of show where we just rolled constantly, we did a bit when we were in the kitchen, but fortunately they planned to use a lot of VO to tell the story which let the visuals be a bit more directed and thoughtful than just reality-style run and gun.

I didn't use the 7Q for this, but when I do, I have some coollcd.com parts I use to keep it really lightweight, I pull off the top handle and replace it with a 15mm rod an then mount the 7Q to that rod with a right angle 15mm rod bracket and a little 15mm rod with a 1/4-20 at the end. If I'm going that route I may use a baseplate with grips and follow focus but it's nice not to have to depend on the bottom rods to be able to mount the monitor if I want to stay as lightweight as possible.
