Wet lube versus dry lube

Re: Wet lube versus dry lube

This question has been asked a couple of times, and all I read was that you should use dry. The reason? I don't know cause no one answers questions related to tapes. At least they don't answer questions asked: like the procedure to switch from one tape to another and if there is any problems if you used two different types of tapes.

So, the answer: stick to dry, cause you are not going to get a better answer.

Check the other threads. They all have the same answers.

Oh, and use the DVM63MQ ones. I don't know why, but that is what everyone says.

All the best

Re: Wet lube versus dry lube

The reason nobody answers is probally because the same question is asked every week. So here goes.

The difference between the 2 lubes is obviously one tape uses a micro lube that is wet, and one uses one that is dry, like graphite dry lube to give you an idea.

The problem when you mix the two is one is wet and one is dry, and mixed together they blend into a "glue" that clogs the system out. If you had to choose between one or the other, Dry is better because it doesnt attract debree like wet lube does.

No as for the PQ/MQ question, they both use dry lubes. Fuji is Dry as well. Sony is wet.

MQ tapes are the most prefered tape, not only because it says so in the manual, but because they use a tighter density so that you get a more reliable data transfer, without the dropouts etc. Another personal reason I use them is because they are white, and this means in the field if you scramble for a blank tape (we all have at least once) you can rip open the new tape, and instead of doing the whole label thing you can just sharpy on a quick label, that you can go back after the shoot and cover with a label with the full information. Also, since its white you can see them better if it gets dropped into the bottom of your bag or drawer. Also, if for some stupid reason you leave them in the open they are white so wont absorb heat like black tapes will so your tape doesnt become a pretzel.

Also, they have a softer pliable case that wont crack and splatter into a million pieces if you drop it, like the normal hard clear plastic cased on cheaper tapes.

Re: Wet lube versus dry lube

oh and as for what to do if you go from one to another, is just clean your heads inbetween the change. There is a link at the top of this forum to show you how to do this manually.

Re: Wet lube versus dry lube

Thanks Jarred,

But I had searched before I asked this type of questions. And since I hadn't found an answer for it, I was asking.

Another question I couldn't find an answer for it is about the Panasonic DVM60 tapes. Are they dry or wet? And is it ok to mix with the DVM63MQ ones?

I tried to ask my dealer, but he didn't have a clue about what I was talking about.

So, I tried to ask here.

Thanks once again.

All the best

Fidel.

Dear Jarred

Thanks for your answer, I had searched the topic and found many discussions on this but - as fidel says too - none were conclusive. You have now provided the perfect, definitive answer for us all. Finally!! I hope people read this and get it. Thanks...
