Western Union Scam

Wow. If I hadn't read that other thread in here about this same scam I might have let this go by. Here's a quick recap. I put a Volvo up on ebay and this guy quickly started writing me saying he would send the money now for the 'item'.

He never referred to it as a car or Volvo, which sent up red flags, as I'm sure he sent the same boilerplate e-mail to others when ripping them off. Each time I e-mailed him he wrote back another boilerplate. Then, I read that someone else in here was scammed the same way. By the way, I've already sold the Volvo but still get these e-mails from this fraud-guy. here's his latest...

"I just got a confirmation from my secretary today that the check will delivered to you today. So here is the ups tracking number(1Z48VR100191781298) for confirmation of the payment....So as soon as you received it have cash and deduct your money for the item,$100 for your running around then wire the remaining money to my shipper via western union money transfer..

Unbeleivable! So I'm wondering what kind of cool vigialante moves I can make within the law to screw this jerk? This address is only a couple miles from my house. Maybe make a hand delivery with a cop? I know a few. Hmmm. I'm totally open to creative ideas. I know, I know, I won't do anything stupid, but it sure sounds like a great window to finally get back at one of these jerks.

Well, well, well. Guess what just showed up at my door via UPS? A check for $4,800.00!!! The Volvo was sold for four hundred bucks.

This is getting good.

If you didn't catch the last thread on this scam, the guy wants me to send him the remaining balance of this $4,800.00 which he will cash. And of course, this check is fraudulent (looks good by the way) and I will be out $4k. Make sense? Interesting stuff. I'm going to call the cops, let them handle it.

Its been done over myspace too..some people from south africa have been sending crappy checks around the world..asking for the left overs to be wired back.

same thing happened to me selling my BMW Z3 online. guy offered to send a certified check for more than I asked because it was from a foreign client and he coudn't change it. I would pocket the difference.

Scam is, it is a real certified check and the bank has to take it, and make funds available immediately. So you get the cash, (send car, money whatever right away) In two weeks the CC is found to be bad, and you have to come up with the cash.

If I were you, I'd keep stringing this guy along...

Tell him that you've cashed the check and are eager to send payment...get him licking his chops...then after a day or so, contact him and tell him you forgot to drop it in the mail...then ask him what his address is again? Then after a few days, disregard that question then ask him if it would just be easier to send cash, or come by with the cash etc. etc.

PS Good lucking getting the cops involved. You will probably get the stock "there is nothing we can do".

I doubt there's anything the cops can do about it. Unfortunately the laws on the books can't keep up with all the creative ways of conning people out of their money. What would the cops charge him with? Attempted scamming?

About the best you can do is either let it go or have some fun at his expense. You could write him back and say that your bank charges a 1% fee to process the check. And they only accept cash, but you're a little short on cash so ask if could he send the $48 to cover the expense and then you'll send him the check for $4000 (of course not). If he actually sends the cash, when you finish laughing send him another note saying that your sorry but your bank also has a $25 fee to generate a cashiers check. A check that will be made out to him in the amount of $4000. Of course the bank needs this $25 in cash and could he send it because you're still short on cash. Keep this endless loop going until you've made $400 off this schmuck. Give the car to charity and laugh all the way to the bank.

the cops might be very interested in this.

I agree the cops should do something I just wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. Because of a recent incident a female friend of mine had I am ye of little faith...not to hijack this thread completely but I will share...its kind of a chilling story...

My friend is a single mom. She went to the movies with her 12 year old daughter. When they came out, there was a note on her car that said "I love your GMC blue eyes." Well, this freaked the hell out of her...but she let it go.

The next morning, she noticed her cat was outside. She never lets her cat out at night so she went and retrieved the cat. A few minutes later while doing the dishes she noticed the cat was outside again. She investigated to see how she was getting outside. The small window to the basement was smashed open. Upon further investigation, she discovered that while she and her daugther was sleeping during the night this sicko intruder entered her house, for God knows why, and proceeded to "use" her daughter's bathroom. Presumably, the author of the note and the intruder were one and the same.

Terrified, she immediately went to the cops. His response, "sorry ma'am. there is nothing we can do. maybe you should get a dog". So, my faith is SERIOUSLY rattled.

Screw it, I'm going to have a little fun before I go the law route, I just want to see if this works. Here's what I e-mailed back to him...

I got the check, thanks! Its way over the amount I needed though. I feel it's better to be honest with you and point out your mistake, I'm a man of faith :)

I went to cash it but my bank is charging me $68.00 for the processing fee which they will only take cash (I have bad credit).

Anyway, if you could send me the $68.00 cash to the same address I can then process the check and wire you the balance of $3,900.00. (if you still dont mind I take a hundred for my time). Just place the cash in a napkin and hide it in an envelope. I'm on disability or I would just pay it myself.

Once I get that cash from you I'll wire the balance to your friend at the address you gave me. Sorry for all the confusion, things get a little crazy around here and I seldom really know what's going on. Being a senior citizen ain't all it's cracked up to be :)

Look forward to doing business with you!

I had this guy who offered to sell me a 2 legged horse if I payed him with Western Union... I passed on the deal because I didn't think such an animal existed... buy maybe... just maybe... :)

not my fault i have a weak bladder. it was either there or the bushes and i didn't want the neighbors to think i was some kind of weirdo.

Warning Ive heard this one done before. I have also heard of people being put in jail for fraud over the checks made out to them. To the police YOU could ook like the fraudster since the check is made out to you. The scam works by making YOU cash a forged check not them. I would let the police get involved or visit http://www.419baiter.com/ for their methods of stringing scam baiters along.
