Hiya,

It's been a while since my last post with the video montage. I recently purchase barry's book and I learned alot of technical stuff, such as depth of field.. and how to use the dvx well. Anyway, It really help motivate to start an old project back up. This is a scene for our little action film. Its gonna be a kung-fu movie with a little bit of a western feel. I might incorporate some hidden tiger fly dragon in there some where. I thought I'd share it with you guys. I want to know if the beginning is too boring without music, and comments on the color correction. I wanted a warm desert feel to it even though there are bushes and trees everywhere. And, another thing, how's my acting? Im the guy with the glasses. Lastly, Audio: voice intro too loud?

thanks

File is 11 mb

you had some really cool shots in there (I really liked the first shot)
I felt it was really slow though... need to make the pace faster. The last part of the fight scene was pretty good.

The colour correction looked cool to me

hiro,

That was a good attempt. I like the colors but I think it may be a bit too saturated. It was hard to tell from the compression. Your fight scene could use some wideshots. The audio can be worked better but overall it was good. Just keep filmming away. Practice does make perfect.

think this was good mateial and that you learned alot from it

Re: Western/Kung-fu swordplay -short film

liked the visuals. would have been cooler in faster motion. My sound didnt' work for some reason? no codec was avail for it. Anyone else have this prob? And i thought i had every codec known!

Re: Western/Kung-fu swordplay -short film

You should try to shoot 16:9, It will be a plus for your image.

Re: Western/Kung-fu swordplay -short film

That was well done. I enjoyed it.

I think some shots could be more dramatic (eg, a tighter dutch shot of the white getting his wrist twisted).

Re: Western/Kung-fu swordplay -short film

Warm, good looking color! I kept thinking that it was a colored grad filter.

It could be my computer but the sound was really low.

Shoot tighter tights and wider wides, I would suggest, otherwise, good job.

something was wrong with the link. could be my computer but i don't think it is. do you have an alternate or even better, a quicktime link? i'd love to check it out. i'm big into kung fu westerns.

Thanks for the comments. When im done with the whole thing, I'll post it. Im sorry if the sound wasnt working right, I encoded in windows media 9 encoder. It's probably not the best... and I dont have any .mov encoder. Sorry! I will have a link for a mov on next post.

Re: Western/Kung-fu swordplay -short film

hey there hiro, not bad! enjoyed it.

i would give you a few critiques - mainly the suspense was there initially when the guy pulled out his sword and stuck it to the guitaroo man. but it dragged on a bit too long for him to get out his gun. the fight was nice, getting there, I'd recommend really thinking through each angle and having each angle/cut reveal something about the fight. like guy swings sword over head and slashes down - a good angle choice might be from a low angle as the other guy blocks with his weapon. certain angles fit certain actions better than others. if you try this out, you will find that your action scenes become more and more stylized. anyways, keep us posted! good job on the efforts

Re: Western/Kung-fu swordplay -short film

hmmm, that was cool. But it does need some work. I don't know if you're into reshooting but it needs a few more angles, and the editing needs to be tightened up.

When the dude pulls out the gun it looks like it just kinda happened, no big deal just happened. If you change your angles and establish the gun as a threatening force it'll probably make much more of an impact.
