We're under attack!!!!! Sony NEX-7, A77, A65, NEX5N

Given that wide c-mount lenses vignette on M4/3 you can be pretty sure they will on the NEX.

Hmmmm......

My understanding is that after 35mm there isn't any vignetting. Here's an example of the NEX5 (same sensor size for anyone who doesn't know) No vigetting at all.

I recognize that it may be because they "cropped" out the vignetting. Interesting....

Here's another:

The reason I'm asking is because I see these videos, but NO ONE is saying anything about CROPPING the image....(that doesn't mean that they are not) Hmmm......

My 5Ns EVF just died. I was looking through it and changing ISO. There was a second of black and grey scrolling lines then darkness. It still has power, I can use the button on the EVF to switch between it and the LCD but the EVF is FUBAR......grrr. Thanks Sony, it worked for a whole 2days!

That sucks man! I hope it comes back up....or they refund your money real quick! :( Sorry, man!!!

It's not coming back. There's a 7 day DOA policy but I'm not sure I want another one! Though I do really like having exposure metering and not having to attach a hulking big z-finder or external EVF.

Alright cool, thanks for testing. I don't think the thread is stripped though, because the screw itself tightens all the way, it's the plate that can still move. I think the mounting hole is to short.

Ok I have the answer. There are 2 different "standard" size 1/4-20 screws. The longer screw worked fine with my really right stuff plate but wouldn't tighten the NEX-5N to the plate on my Blackbird. The shorter screw tightens.

I'm still really pissed about the Sony NEX sound click issue but in retrospect, it is probably not as big a deal as I thought it would be. I was shooting a student project today with the new Canon XA10. Link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=749467&Q=&is=REG&A=details

My school just bought fifteen of these cameras at $2000 a pop for the TV station and I noticed that the camera had a clicking noise which sounded very close to the sound described on the NEX. The sound was like a little bb rattling around inside the body put it was isolated, as if the bb was inside a little box which allowed it to move around ever so slightly. Rotating the camera left and right, up and down and dutch rolls produced an audible click to my ear. When I listened to the audio from the onboard mic, it was EXACTLY like the click sound in the NEX videos. I went up to the equipment room and looked at the other bodies and they all had the click, all fifteen of them. This was not the image stabilization because that produced a separate clunk sound which only happened if the camera was tilted forward or backward.

How many cameras have this problem? I don't think anyone cares about the Canon click because it has 2 XLR inputs and we use shotguns and lavs for our recording so I never shows up in the audio.

Now the NEX click could be way louder to the ear than on the Canon but if it is the same, there won't be any issues if you are using an external recorder with lavs and boom mics. I think I will still move ahead with the NEX. I always use monopods, tripods and shoulder mounts so I don't think it will really be an issue and I already decided to pick up a zoom recorder so I think I will be fine until the next hot mirrorless cam comes along.

Im about to purchase one nex 5n but concern on some few things.
1. is the 18-55 usable in lets say wedding coz the longer end is most likely 5.6 already and afraid its to dark in church ceremony.
2. is there a dedicated switch for the manual and auto focus?
3. In my gh2 which i really like, you can set the autofocus in contineous or not. this means that in autofocus if you disable the contineous focusing, once you half press, it will autofocus and stays there not until you do half press again to dictate focusing to another subject during recording or just before recording. The question is do we have option for the nex 5n to behave in that manner or just contineous autofocus and manual focus only?

thanks in advance :)

I just flew the NEX-5N on my Blackbird. It doesn't click if I keep my movements smooth. Any jerky moves and it does click. This thing is so light I had to add weight to the top of the Blackbird and there are no weights on the bottom!

OK....so....bear with me for a moment and come on a wonderful (but frustrating) journey.

So, I'm at work with a NEX5N sitting here on my lap. (If you are wondering, yes it is like it is "dancing" around and I'm not sure exactly what to say about that...ahem...where was I?)

Problem #1: NO SD CARD WITH ME!!!! AaAAaaAAAaaaaarrrrrrGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!
Problem #2: No adapters for any of my WICKED FREAKING GLASS!!!!!! (AKA: 4 Iscoramas and more than 40 other anamorphic lenses) Holy Canolie.....I am LITERALLY pacing around at my office watching the clock sssslllllllooooowwwwwly tick by....man! I need to get home and get a card in this bad boy so I can SHOOT SOME FOOTY!!!!! I have some adapters on order now. M42, M39, gonna order a C-Mount adapter too. But MAN is it going to be a lllloooooooooong 5 days while I wait. Good news, I'll be shooting with the kit lens in about 1.5hrs. WAHOO!!!

Enough whining....

So far (from a photog perspective)....

I'm thrilled with what I can see from the 1 pic I can shoot at a time (and view). duh...

BUT.....I MUST agree with the other folks who have said the same thing, the usability on this thing BLOWS CHUNKS!!!! Changing ISO is plain STUPID (must get into the menus to do that), I'm sure I'll get used to a lot of this stuff, but it's clunky for sure from that perspective. The sensor shoot STUPID CLEAN at ISO3200. 6400 will be used in a pinch, and 12800 is a bit noisy for my taste....but remember this is photo stuff, but still, I know we have a bunch of hybrid users and photogs on the site, so....heads up. Uh, I think the "purist" photogs are gonna HATE the NR on this thing, I'll need to shoot more, but, It is a bit much for my taste, but I'll tell you this right now. I'm gonna shoot the CRAP out of this thing!!!!! I am THRILLED with what I see in the photos. I don't see anything that I wasn't already expecting. (Including the NR, Bad usability, etc.) I'm so glad I bought it!!!! I can't wait to get some REAL GLASS in front of it and see some CHARACTER!!!!! Mad love to DVXUsers EVERYWHERE!!!

You can assign the functions you want to instantly access to the scroll wheel. You can program up to 5 functions. I have ISO, white balance, and picture profiles assigned. The scroll wheel functions as a joystick too. Shutter speed and aperture are automatically controlled by the scroll wheel so really you can access up to 7 functions. I don't have to go into the menu for anything except to change from 24-60p. On the 5D I have to go into the menu for picture profiles so the Sony is actually better in this respect. The only thing I don't like is the video record button is tiny and in an awkward position.

There's no NR on the RAW stills.

With Leica glass it looks every bit as good as the 5D.

I saw the overheating symbol yesterday after shooting a few minutes of video out in the sun. It hasn't shut down on me yet but I wouldn't risk doing a shoot with just one body. The 60p is a bit disappointing, the bit-rate is too low but Vitaliy is getting one http://www.personal-view.com./talks/discussion/762/official-sony-nex-5n-topic/p1 so hopefully we'll get a hack soon.

I've been testing it with Leica-r, Iscorama, Sony 16mm f/2.8 with the wide angle and fisheye adapters, and a Pentax takumar 55mm f/1.7 that I just picked up for $60. I'm gonna shoot some night footy with my Pentax-k 50mm f/1.2. I only bought one EOS to NEX adapter which has a threaded mount. All of my lenses have been adapted to EOS with Leitax adapters.

Reports are coming in that new land speed record was set by HHL to get to the SDcard......... ;) cannot wait to hear about the resluts you get .

ok, so, lots of 5N cameras around already... what's the consensus on aliasing/moire and codec? and also, if possible, on the more ethereal concept of cinematic image...

24p looks very clean, as good if not better than the 5D. 60p is too compressed, muddy with fast movement and at at high ISOs. I haven't really gone looking for aliasing/moire but I don't think it's going to be any worse than the 5D. Dynamic range and colours are very good.

also: the A77 got reviewed at dxomark; in stills, it's pretty close to the 7D/60D/600D, except it has a lot more DR at low ISO (50 and 100): http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Ca...Canon/(appareil3)/483|0/(brand3)/Canon#tabs-2 - still no idea about how good it is in video mode (for example, my guess is that without a picture profile like technicolor's cinestyle, most of that DR will go to waste)

Here is a test video I shot in a day with the yet to be released a65 http://www.vimeo.com/29245251

If the A77 video quality is similar then expect the following: the highest usable ISO in video mode is 400. Next step is 800 which is much too noisy. Also, in low light when shooting flat surface colors you can clearly see some nasty artifacts. I had the camera for a very short time and hope it all can be tweaked to get an even better picture quality. Overall I felt moire and aliasing are better controlled in this camera then the Canon 7d.

Thanks!

Johnnie

I expected the A77/65 to perform poorly in low light due to the high pixel count and translucent mirror but 800 ISO too noisy! That's really bad and a step backwards for a mid range DSLR. Looks like Sony marketing just wanted to get something in stores for Christmas with more megapixels than the competition. In the RAW examples I've compared, the A77/65 is also a lot less sharp than the competition. The NEX-5N is much sharper and fantastic in low light @1600ISO.

Check whether noise reduction is on when shooting in video mode on the A65. On the 5N it's always on, you can see the pre-proccessed image on the LCD and it's really noisy.
