We're under attack!!!!! Sony NEX-7, A77, A65, NEX5N

I've been looking through the NEX-5N manual http://www.scribd.com/doc/63722818/NEX-5N-Handbook and there's nothing about HDMI out on record, but not being specific about video features in manuals is typical of camera manufacturers. You can turn off display info which looks like it only leaves the display with a line of info at the bottom of the screen so if it does have uncompressed 1080p HDMI out 2.35:1 letterboxing would give you a clean image! This is the first thing I'm going to test when mine arrives.

It looks like peaking works in video mode!

You can assign a function to the back wheel, in my case that would be ISO.

Squig,

I read through the manual and thought about letterboxing too. Tell me if you think I'm crazy, but it also mentions a viewfinder only mode where all the info is displayed. If ALL the info is displayed there, then maybe none is displayed on in the HDMI out. This means buying the viewfinder....

BTW you all need to go download the NEX-7 footage from Andrew Reid, that billh linked to above. I could only get it to play without skipping in Premiere Pro. Pretty fantastic: http://vimeo.com/28479793

If HDMI out IS active on record it might still be disabled when the viewfinder is active. I didn't buy a viewfinder but if I'm blown away by the image I'll probably get one....mini z-finder!

Footage is re-compressed unfortunately. There's some compression artifacts in the background but I can't tell if it's just the re-compression.

Sounds good....I'm liking the "5N image reminds me of Canon" vibe as I've ordered the NEX-5N as a B-cam and slo-mo mate for my 5D. Hopefully turning down the contrast, saturation, and sharpness in portrait mode will match nicely with the Canon neutral settings. Vitaliy if you're listening: hack it bro! Higher bit-rates, clean HDMI out, and more picture profile options would be very cool.

Great to hear squig! FYI for everyone who thinks it's too good to be true, the HX9 ALREADY has that function. (CLEAN out with nothing on the screen) During record it goes black, but people have already used the Nano to catch the stream without pushing record. So, it wouldn't surprise me to see the same from the NEX5N. Congrats to us all!!!

Uhm, I don't know...both the video and the review it doesn 't look/sound too promising, except for the price.

I spoke to Andrew, he shot the low light scenes with high ISO noise reduction set to normal. The higher ISO NR settings are really bad on these Sonys they blur everything and it looks like mud. You can't turn the NR off but the low setting is much better. The other low ISO stuff he shot looks a lot better. Sony have to update the firmware and turn the nasty NR off!

After 3 years there hasn't been a DSLR that does everything right out of the box so it's going to take some time to get this one sorted out just like the others but I see huge potential with this camera considering its size, price, great sensor, and 60p 1080p. If the codec can be hacked, the NR switched off, clean HDMI out is enabled, and Mosaic make an anti-aliasing filter for it, this camera could blow all the others away!

The idea of something like the NEX-7 (assuming it can output a clean HDMI signal) mated with a PIX 220 recorder (which would give you dual XLR inputs) and recording 4:2:2 ProRes/DNxHR with the option to attach just about any lens you can think of, is incredibly exciting.

It would make it rather like a S35mm-sized SI-2K Mini, basically a sensor in a box.

I'm very intrigued to see how this turns out, it certainly looks like Sony are going after the video-shooting market hard with these cameras.

I've heard you can't adjust your region on the Nex5N - so probably not on the others too. That's a major disappointment since one won't be able to shoot 24p in NTSC land .

Would be interesting to see what Sony's reaction would be to major hacks on their cameras -- considering them suing people who have been jail breaking Playstations and their recent history. They've probably beefed up security in all their firmware since the PS3 incident.

Yeah the region thing is annoying. I bought mine from the US because I shoot more 24/60p than 25p. If Sony don't want people hacking their cameras they should deliver the firmware that their customers want- multiple frame rates, user selectable high quality bit rates, NOISE REDUCTION OFF IN VIDEO MODE!, audio level control and monitoring, clean HDMI out, cropmarks, etc..etc.... They can't sue some guy in Russia!

That one's topping the Canons by far!

How's Sony's warranty with overseas purchases? Although, if we're already thinking of hacks it's probably not a big issue.

Not sure about Sony but most electronics manufacturers only do local warranties. I buy a lot of gear from B&H in the US because it's usually way cheaper. It's not a huge expense to send something back to the states and I haven't had a warranty issue on anything yet.

Just shot a few test videos around the house. I am extremely surprised by how nice 6400 iso looks. I'd say it looks way better than my 5D, AF100, GH2 and T2i. I am also shocked at how small the camera is. It is tiny. If I get the 16mm this camera will fit in my pocket. From the few minutes that I used it, the handling was fine. I had a 28-70mm lens on it, which looked pretty funny, but it handled fine. I'll probably throw it on some sort of rig when I am actually shooting with it though. Trying to figure some sort of rig out where I can take advantage of how small the camera is. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. The only thing I was bothered by was the lack of buttons but once I started assigning functions to the custom buttons it was much better. Overall I am VERY happy with this camera so far. I have a small shoot on Sunday that I'll use it for and I'll see how I feel about it after that.

p.s. The new auto save feature on here is great. I hit the back button by accident and I was able to get my entire post back.

F[/URL]aux Pro will be perfect for the NEX-5N. That's what I'm going to do. I just received parts from China, gonna make a batch of 10. It will be a couple of weeks + the time it takes me to get the NEX-5N (so I can custom fit the plate). I updated the rig so its more compact....anywho. :)

These little Sony's are going to look so obscure on rigs, "Is that a phone with a fixed focal lens attached? - No it's a camera"

Hmmm.....interesting. Does this look obscure? (It's OK if you think it does....I'm just asking) This is the HX9 on an early version of the FAUX PRO. The people I showed thought it looked wicked. And it worked great! What do you say?

I'm very excited about how the NEX5N is going to look on the latest version. Early feedback from other parties is the same. (Opinions will vary like always which is fine.)
