Went to the butterfly pavillion

I had fun shooting this. I have never been to one of these and they actually allowed cameras :) My workflow was: (1)4gig p2, (1)250Matxor OneTouch External (1)Fully charged battery :)

Settings: Cine V. Detail:+2 Croning: +2 Master P.: -6 - 720/24pn 60fps, Shot in Auto mode. with Auto focus and Manual focus. The place was a green house and misty as well as 60-80% humidity. Used the ND filter SOMETIMES when camera said I should. Sometimes It is wrong, It makes way too dark when I take its suggestion. So sometimes I did not take HVXs advice and the footy looked great.

Compression was, QT 7 d-load - 800kbs - custom fps 23.96 - 600x337:16:9 aspect ration


PLEASE FEEDBACK. I would love to know how I could improve. This is only my 2nd REAL shoot.

very nice job! Smooth camera work. Did you do it all handheld? Cool camera compostion as well with great colors. Overall a great job. My only suggestions would be a couple of editing cuts and to speed something up a bit.. but overall you haver some style and it looked sweet.

I'd contact that place about letting them use it for something/getting a gig/ or just to be cool. I'm sure they'd love to see that!

yea I shot the whole thing handheld. I was EXTREMELY nervious being I have never shot hand held. EVER till this day :) Always shot shoulder, tripod, or monpod. One thing I forgot was to increase the shutter to maybe like 1/500 so I can see those wings in immense detail. You live you learn.

There is one shot I am PROUD of. It is the shot near the end with the Preying-mantis. NO NOISE AT ALL....

Only one criticism.

At first the music was exciting, but then it seemed to overpower the subject matter...

Do you have the latest versin of QT? maybe some more info, so I can give a proper assesment to why you may not be able to view.

OK, really this is all a matter of personal taste, so don't take me too seriously. Plus, you pretty much anchored your edit to this music bed, with some cool effects to match the music, so I don't thinks its really worth the trouble of changing at this point. It depends on how far you want to take this thing. You might even return to the pavillion and shoot additional footage using what you learned from your previous successes and mistakes.

I'm just thinking, delicate butterflies = delicate music. Of course, this can really lend itself to cliché and so you've probably gotta listen to alot of different classical, movie and modern jazz instrumental pieces before you find the right thing. Somehow Santa (who I've seen in concert and love) wailing on guitar with a big beat just doesn't mesh with the subject matter. My wife edits and she listens to different music weeks before she starts something, anticipating what the subject matter will be, trying to find the feel. She gets it right about 80 percent of the time. Other times she'll cut and halfway through, throw it all away then try and find music that works better. Sometimes it comes just by accident. Watching a movie on TV, HOLY COW, THATS THE FEELING I WAS LOOKING FOR, then buying it off iTunes that night. Other times not so easy.

One thing is for sure, you've got some beautiful shots and subject material

Very nice shots. I love da bugs. Was that all overcranked? The one butterfly at the beginning with the kid (with hat) looked almost like an animation...very cool. The ND filter suggestion by the HVX I think is more of just that...a suggestion if you want tighter DOF. You generally would not switch on an ND without adjusting the aperature/shutter. (wider aperature or slower shutter). Considering the subject matter...you'd probably want the highest shutter speed and a greater DOF especially in hand held mode so your hunch to keep the ND filter off was the right way to go.

Nice shooting. (the music stuff is a matter of taste, but yeah, I would think Pink Floyd or Brahms would be more in keeping with butterflys than Santana :).
 
Yeah, I shot everything overcranked at 24pn/60fps, I did a a ramp on that, nothing big, and was surprised by the outcome. :) thanks so much for the advice I love hearing how to make myself better at my passion.
 
I never knew Santa wailed on the guitar. :) I have new found respect for the old geezer. I've never seen him in concert but he does stop by my house about once a year if I'm good.

To be honest, I have no clue about the stock footage market. I shot this for fun, and practice. My wife said we should try to sell to the pavilion and also as stock footage, and also was told that here as well. I would like to capitalize on what I shoot, being I need to pay off this camera, and all the stuff I still need to buy. But who would'nt? I think I will pitch it to the pavillion where I shot, if they want to but. KUDOS!!! If not well I guess not :)

I dont know what to tell you. The only thing I can say is make sure that you have QT 7. Cause it is H.264 QT7 compression.

motionzonehd... HVXguy has it going on. Your footage would have a home there... But I do think something could come from the butterfly house... Maybe atleast a slice of their delicious butterfly pie... Hmmm so yummy and so colorful. I was it down with a big glass of dolphin smoothie... And it really does taste like tuna smoothie...
