Well, that was stupid. (5D on eBay)

Okay, well as the thread title states, I've done something that's proven foolish: I bought a 5D Mark II from one of the shady Brooklyn camera places on eBay. In my case, it's IBuyPlasma.com, but it seems they're all pretty interchangeable.

Why did I do it? Pretty simple, I wanted to use Bing's cashback program (8% on eBay) and IBuyPlasma had the best price going. Also, their feedback is currently at 99.6% with only two negative reviews out of 363 for the past month, both of which are about shipping being slow. The rest, including several other 5D MKII purchases, were positive. I felt reassured, and I ordered.

I know I should've Googled, but I did not. I just went with the eBay feedback system which as I've now began reading can be effectively gamed through various methods. The most likely outcome seems that I'll receive a grey market camera without a valid Canon U.S. warranty.

Now, for the upside... I did get a tracking number soon after ordering (the next day). The package is coming via UPS and will be here tomorrow. So there's no issue with delayed shipment or them contacting me and attempting to upsell. The package therefore isn't opened yet, which I think leaves me in a stronger position with respect to returns. Also, I paid via PayPal which - if I'm not mistaken - should make disputing it easier if need be. I did however pay with a debit card rather than a credit card, so I can't do a chargeback.

So what I'm asking is... what do you think I should do next? I've read on various 3rd party feedback sites that returns to this retailer are, to say the least, not easy. I've also read, however, that these sites have cleaned up their act somewhat because they are now being monitored by the NY state attorney's office. The temptation to open the box is huge, obviously, as I'm really excited to get my new camera. But I'm also extremely wary now - a couple days too late - about getting scammed here.

Thanks a lot for any advice. And yes, once again, I know I was stupid here.

Beyond the obvious (of course this is gray market), if I were you, and I actually received a working 5D2, I'd probably keep it. If you try to send it back, who knows what might happen. You might never see it again, you might not see your money again, you might wait weeks/months, etc. I'd probably cut my losses, thank god a working camera actually arrived, and call it a day. But, it's a tough call -- I personally had Err 20/30 lockup problems with my 5D2 and had to send it in within the first month of owning it -- so I can relate with the value of a US Warranty.

err20/30 can be a huge problem, I've had to send my cam in twice now 8 months after use because it can cause the camera to be completely unusable. So if you don't mind having to possibly pay for repair costs down the road to get the mirror box or shutter replaced.

So I should keep it, and just hope for the best? I read elsewhere that Canon USA will repair it if needed but they treat it as out of warranty and add a $175 surcharge.

This really is one big epic fail on my part.

Well, I got it and opened it. Everything seems to be in order - there isn't a Canon U.S. warranty, but that was part of the listing. Otherwise it's a brand new Canon 5D Mark II, everything still in its original packaging, no photocopied manuals or removed kit lens. I've just shot with it for the last 3 hours doing a mix of video and stills using the 2.0.3 firmware and it worked great. Fingers crossed, but it seems I got (somewhat) lucky.

Seriously, how much money did you "save" for all the headache you're going through? You really don't have to go through these super-shady sellers on ebay if you don't want to. Adorama sells on ebay and they carry genuine USA warranty parts. That's what I go through when I want the 8% back.. Just did it on the 16-35 the other day.

Man, I'm all about kicking myself in this thread, I thought I'd made that clear ;)

I don't even care about the cashback really, I'd gladly trade the $200 or so I "saved" to have a camera with a real warranty from a seller I could trust. It's just I thought I was dealing with a trustworthy dealer. Believe me, from here on out, it's B&H, Adorama or Amazon for big ticket items. I wish Adorama'd popped up when I searched the other night, I didn't know they did eBay listings.

I've Ebayed many times on some big ticket items. I've had a couple items that I've received that were definitely not as described. For example, I ordered a McIntosh MHT100 that came absolutely destroyed when I opened it. I filed a dispute immediately and they froze my funds to the seller. I returned the item and got my money back. Paypal is the way to pay. I believe you have a limited number of days to file a dispute so I suggest you use the camera as much as possible. Don't give any feedback until you are 100% sure you're not going to file a dispute.

just wait til somebody uses your email associated with painpal and get your painpal account frozen for life.....painpal is as sure as crossing a bridge made of twisted toilet paper!

all they need to abuse your painpal account is to know your email addy...and then we start talking...

did the seller send it to you like that or did that happen in shipping?

Seller claimed that it was sent pristine. I didn't care so I filed a claim. Good thing seller insured it.

TIA. Good to know.

Sorry OP for the OT.

Ive gotten taken for $1000 on painpal... regardless how safe it is, you still gotta be careful. I was not so lucky, I filled a claim and won but they said they where unsuccessful in recovering my funds and continued on about if they ever did they would re-reimburse me.... Yea Right! unfortunately I am forced to continue to use as it is the most popular and trusted medium!
