Weird squeeze mode??

I thought I could've sworn that the LCD shows squeeze mode like a squeezed image filling the entire LCD frame., BUT I'm using squeeze mode and the picture doesn't really look squeezed and it's giving me the widescreen black bars on the top and bottom! I have the widescreen bars off so I should be getting a full image on my LCD but I'm getting the black widescreen bars everytime I put my camera on squeeze mode. Wasn't it squeeze mode filled the frame and looked squished?? Why am I getting widescreen bars instead?

Your solution appreciated,

JM

it seems that u have display set to 16:9 and not 4:3. when the display settings are set to 4:3 it will display squeezed mode as "squashed"...and show u the entire frame "underscanned" (better for internet) image go to display settings. if u set it to 16:9 display then squeeze will have the black bars and show the underscanned image (better for tv). This is Not the same thing as shooting 4:3 or shooting letterbox ect...this is just how the lcd is displyed. Go to display settings and change it.

Thanks Barry, I was trying to figure this out and making my mind go in circles. That explains it!

iambredz, I don't have my dvx with me to check, but can you clarify on the advantage of setting the display 16:9 VS. 4:3 or vice versa. And can you explain more about "underscanned" and why it's better for TV or the internet? (you stated "underscanned" for both 16:9 and 4:3, i'm thinking one is a typo?)

Thanks,

JM

well Barry speaks about the 100A ..i was speaking about the B model. televsions cut off a portion of the frame and gives an "overscanned" image...however pc monitors do not suffer from this. therefore if u are shooting with the overscanned image as a guide and have a boom mic right out of frame...then when u view it on ur pc u will see the boom mic (depending on how close it is). but if you are shooting just for TV display then the overscanned image as a guide is fine. I keep it on 4:3 display so i can see the entire frame...while it is squashed it doesnt bother me at all cuz i get to see what i am working with in case i have to put stuff on the net also. however is not so much of a problem cuz u can always crop it in post...hopefully u wont be cropping out something important.

So, just to confirm, there is no difference in the final recorded video of 16:9 display VS. 4:3.? It's just that the 16:9 shows the "overscan" image which means some of the image being recorded is not shown on the LCD screen and the 4:3 shows all of it on the LCD screen? 16:9 display mode doesn't record the letterbox.

How much of the recording in the 16:9 display mode in squeezed is not shown? Would it be an insignificant amount where I can just enlarge the video by a small % without any image quality issues?

It seems much easier to me to frame and compose the shots in a 16:9 format unsqueezed than it is in 4:3 squeezed.

Also, if I use a widescreen external monitor like an Ikan, I guess the display mode doesn't make a difference either way for external monitor viewing?

Thanks,

JM

Correct. remember this is just LCD display...not when choosing what aspec ratio (camera setup)

I think its pretty insignificant that u can crop and enlarge without it being noticable.

I duno...ive never used an external monitor. and keep in mind i'm talkin about the 100b ...Barry mentioned the A( i duno about the A). I dont know what model u have.
