GH4 Weird quality issue

So I started recording in 1080p mode and the first few frames of the footage looks bad. I mean, REALLY bad. Check this out:

The rest of the frames clear up some but they still look rough:

Do I have a faulty camera or something?! UGH. :Drogar-Mad(DBG):

A lot of factors here.
You told us 1080p, but is it:

AVCHD, MOV, MP4(LPCM) or MP4?
24p, 30p or 60p?
20, 24, 28, 50, 100 IPB, 200 All-I?
iDynamic on?
iResolution on?
Looks like Cine-D. Tweaks to any of the variables? (contrast, saturation, sharpness, noise reduction, etc?)
ISO?
Variable frame rate on and if so what frame rate?

Mode: 200Mbps ALL-INTRA LPCM

MOV

iDynamic STANDARD
iResolution STANDARD
Cine-D - Everything -5 except for Hue, which is +1

ISO 400

No variable frame rate.

First off, disable "i" anything.

Secondly, your using a flat profile and by dialing everything down you've flattened the image even more.

You also don't say what lens was used.

Try the Natural profile and put everything back to zero and work from there. Do not blindly follow other peoples profiles. Check them out for yourself, unless of course you do have a faulty cam. But I kind of doubt it.

I've noticed the poor quality like you've shown here on the first frame of most clips I've shot, but it's never recorded an entire clip like that... very strange.

It obviously looks like an encoding issue, does it do this in 4k mode?

What SD cards are you using?

ok I may be having a moment but when I play back gh4 footage in fcpx its soft if when it stops the frame is sharp....

In the upper right hand corner of your viewer there's a thing looks like a light switch. Click it, and an option appears for better quality or better performance. If your system is up to snuff, you should be able to play at better quality no problem.

Oh, and never judge off your computer monitor unless it's really well calibrated. When I play 4k footage off the camera to my 106", calibrated 1080p projector at its native 24hz rate, I am blown away by how good it looks.

Looks like it's figured out, but in high detail scenes, I've heard "All-I" recording is actually less effective. IPB mode actually analyzes preceding frames and predicts where the bit-rate should be utlized, while All-I just weights everything equally. I never use All-I... but your mileage may vary.

OP hasn't actually replied to any of this, someone else just had an epiphany during the thread.

I encounter the same issue as OP but only for the first frame of most clips, never has it continued into any of the useful portion of a clip.

I'm curious as to the outcome.

I think the problem was that I took the camera out without changing any settings at all. I reset the camera and made sure idynamic and iresolution were off and it looked a lot better.

That's very odd. I believe you, but iDynamic and iResolution don't do anything to the image like you were experiencing (Based on your screenshots).

Oh well. Problem solved.

First frames has always been a little bit worse in GH cameras. The codec thinks and calculates the right compression value and first frames has less bitrate in that process. That was a problem with first hacked GH2 files and the problem was less noticeable later.
