Weird output from D7000 AV port to Beachtek SVU-2

This is a strange problem. I've got a Beachtek SVU-2 that should display the audio levels coming out of the camera. I use it in conjunction with the Beachtek DXA-8 which handles phantom power
from external mikes. I can take the signal from the D7000 AV out and record to a Sony PCM-D50 and everything is fine. But when I take that same cable and plug it into the SVU-2, I get nothing.
I can take the output from the Sony PCM-D50 (that I recorded from the D7000 AV port) and plug it into the SVU-2 and it displays the audio levels perfectly. It just can't go directly from the D7000 to the SVU-2. I guess there's something different about the signal coming directly out of the D7000 that is incompatible with the Beachtek. I don't know enough about audio to know what I can do to boost or tone down the signal to make it work. Any ideas?

BTW, I've eliminated the external mic input in the above setup to reduce the number of variables.
When hooked up to the external mic, it's the same non-display result.
