Weird Noise Problems

Hey all, here's one for you:

We just shot the first ten pages of a feature over the weekend and ran into a problem with radio reception. That is, our camera, through an AT-835B Shotgun on a boom picked up Mexican radio and recorded it to tape. It's slight, but definitely there - you can actually make out what they're sayin, if you speak Spanish. Thank God it only happened in one scene. We think it was possibly caused by aluminum foil we taped to the wall for bouncing light. Or maybe cheap XLR cables? We used Neutrik cable - anyone heard of this brand? We were shooting on the third floor of an old apartment building in Hollywood and the radio reception varied depending on what room we were in.

Theories? Suggestions on how to avoid in the future? Oh, and we did monitor sound while shooting, just couldn't solve the problem on set. Any advice on this problem is greatly appreciated.

The footage, BTW, captured on a DVX100 and DVX100A, looks fantastic.

Re: Weird Noise Problems

Neutrik isnt actually that bad.. but they make connectors so it could be a cheap unshielded wire with neutrik connectors.. in that case I have seen some pretty sad soldering jobs and miss-grounded cables... you can unscrew the connectors and look at the wires to see if any of them are connected together.. if any wires are doubled up.. its not a balanced signal.

Did that scene happen at night? Radio interference is worse at night.

Re: Weird Noise Problems

Yeah, we did shoot at night. We just purchased 2 Hosa cables this morning in case it was the cables. The internal mikes picked up clean audio but we're only using that as a last resort. And of course, we can always loop it, down the line...

We'll see...

yeah.. Believe it or not radio signals amplify at night time.
