weird lower 3rd area bug on footage

so i shot two things over the weekend with my 150. saturday i shot a bar mitzvah ceremony on a brand new 32gb card at 720 24p.

then on sunday i shot some stuff of an opera, using one of my older 8gb cards at 720 24p as well.

i saw this on monday while editing. i was able to cut around it, only last for about 3 seconds, it was kind of flickering in and out.

and then yesterday when i was chapter marker'n the bar mitzvah i saw it again. fortunately it was barely noticeable and was shorter than the other one and not white, it was just a little darker.

but i'm kind of scared of this. saturday's was barely noticeable. and then sundays was all kaboom! white and big and in your face. i haven't shot anything else since sunday so i'm going to do some tests tonight. the flicker on sunday was about 4-5 minutes into a recording. the clip on saturday was about 100 minutes into a recording.

and i've formatted the cards since then, but i have the private folders backed up, so i'm going to put them back on a card and see if it shows up in the raw footage.

i just copied the data back onto an 8gb card and checked it via MCR mode on the cam, no issues.

but when i first saw this little blip in the clip on monday i tried transcoding it again and it still did it. so yeah, luckily i was able to edit around it.

so, maybe this is some sort of a transcode issue then.

When we first got this camera at work it had a similar issue. (I posted pics in the forums, too) My experience is that the footage played fine on the camera, but got the artifacting when transcoding. Here is the weird part: after a couple of times of this happening, it has never happened again- and I'm using the same card still~ go figure.

i talked to some other hmc150 users. one of them mentioned having issues with it a while back, but used another transcoder on a windows machine to work past it. i'm just glad that the raw footage was not affected by it.

yep, got it here too... I'm dealing with a huge mess because of this right now!

We have 2 HMC150's and it happens on both despite different cards, card readers and computers. It's almost certainly a transcoding issue.... playback in the camera is always fine.

Seems more common on the 720p 30 (over 60p) setting. Sometimes it only shows on the transcoders preview... the conversion to AIC or DVCPro HD is OK. It's real pain and often I'm at my wits end.

Most recently I got a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card and recaptured the playback from the 150's HDMI connector. All fine. But this card only supports capture to DVCPro HD, Apple ProRes HQ or uncompressed. So you might have to transcode again to your editing format. It also can't capture 24p.

My results from different transcoders are shown below:

FCP : blocks come and go. Longer clips more at risk

Toast Titanium : better at not showing blocks but 30P (over 60) footage turns out to render with only the original 30 frames, but is tagged at 60p. It plays back at 2x speed. If you reconform it to 30fps in Cinema Tools the vision comes into speed, but now the audio is 1/2 speed.

iMovie 08/09 : shows blocks in preview, but transcode is pretty good. It seems to want to make weird frame sizes though. It's made to work with 1080 sources.

VoltaicHD: just got it. It seems so slooooooooooooooow. Gave up. More work needed on my part.

All I know is that something's not right....

OK More...

After updating our MacPro and Final Cut to the latest, OS, FCP, Quicktime, Pro Apps Support and everything else I could find, we discovered that FCP 6.0.5 consistently showed these blocks in the Preview window of the Log and Transfer Pane. However, on import using the Apple Intermediate CODEC, the resulting clips were clean. Phew...

I guess If anything won't import correctly, we'll use the capture from the Intensity card as a back up.

Hope this helps

do any of you have perian installed? some have posted issues with it and have suggested removing it from your system.

(that's why I only shoot in non-PH mode for anything critical.... 'til this is solved... I've seen the blocks in 1080 and 720 30p and 24p PH...)

luckily everything i've had those glitches on has been stuff i can edit around, but i still don't like dealing with it and hopefully it won't ever popup on something i can't edit around.

and yes i have perian, but i kind of need it unfortunately for a couple more weeks. after that i'm going to replace my hard drive in my macbook pro and do a fresh install of everything and see how that works.
