Weird Footage w/ After Effects

Re: Weird Footage w/ After Effects

Please describe (shortly) your workflow mentioning the logic of the timeline and the effects.

Also, I'm interested to know how you created the "canvas" over which the "camera" moves and "sees" different sections (picture panes, tv set etc.)

Thank you.

Re: Weird Footage w/ After Effects

The workflow was basically this:

1) Dumped all of the footage we shot into Vegas, then saw what was of any value. Then rendered those into individual files.

2) Decided that it might look neat with some AE stuff, so we shot Waki just saying some things ("Wow!" or "Look at that!") against a white wall. Dumped that in Vegas, and individual files again.

3) Made a large texture image with extra high resolution in Photoshop, and a bunch of different little background images.

4) Made the large texture image my main "Parent" file in AE and then built everything around that (you just have to pan with the Parent file and nothing else). When stuff disappeared off camera for a little while, just had those images/video fade out so I had that portion of the texture file to work with again.

5) Once it was all done, I rendered it, and then put the file back into Vegas.

6) Greened out the TV images in Photoshop, then important them, and used chroma key in Vegas to put the AE footage into Vegas.

7) Rendered it.

8) Finally, in Vegas, with my master file in place, I did those panning, into-the-television shots, so it didn't look like rough cuts any more (more fluid that way, I think).

9) Inserted some music, cleaned up the AE audio a bit, and then rendered it one last time.

Seems difficult in writing it out here, but it really wasn't. This was a pretty easy After Effects project because it was just layers. No difficulties with 3D. Just need loads and loads of hard drive space.
