Weird focus problem...won't stay on MF

When I switch my dvx from AF to MF, it vascillates between MF and AF while on MF, and remains on AF while on AF. So basically, I can't lock focus down because it intermittenly switches to autofocus when it should be in manual.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that I've been using a 35mm adapter and that's been exerting serious pressure on the lens barrel, since when I removed the adapter, the problem became less serious. Any help would be hugely appreciated....
 
No, it's much stranger than that. When I'm in AF it behaves as it should, when I'm in MF it (sometimes) switches back and forth between AF and MF, sometimes very quickly (like 4-5 times a second) sometimes just occasionally, but it always lingers on MF most of the time, switching briefly to AF.

My iris wheel has a dirty potentiometer so maybe it's just dirt on the circuits futzing everything up, but it seems to get worse when I exert pressure on the lens by using a 35mm adapter.
 
When I adjust the aperture, the problem gets worse. Maybe an issue with communication between the lens and the camera?

Whatever it is, it sounds like it could vacuum up my whole bank account to get fixed.
