Weekend of decision hath come! HVX202

Mavoz, be very careful. Make sure this dealer is an authorized dealer and that you get your full waranty. It sounds more than a little dodgy to me.

Mavoz,

Being you are a self proclaimed enthusiast and not a working video pro, its alot of cash to spend for a hobby. But, perhaps you live at the level where that kind of cash is easy to let go.

Anyway, if it were me in your place, I would rent an HVX for the weekend or longer if you can to try it out. See if you like it and if it will meet your needs. Then, if you do like it, buy it.

The same could apply to the DVX. Compair the cameras, make an informed hands-on choice.

Good advice...I guess the way I look at it is I have a bit of passion for creativity with video...and a range of ideas for short films related to interesting stories of people I know..(Such as my Uncle who fought on the Russian Front in WW2)

I'd like to film these stories..while these people are still alive....

I could quit my full time job...go to film school....etc etc...or I could just buy a good camera and have a crack at learning on the job...to me this seems like a 'cheaper' option....and indeed less of a radical change of life!

I'm also not really into buying sports cars, yachts, jet skis...or going on expensive resort style holidays...I'm actually happy to have a roof over my head..and food on the table! I'd much prefer to spend wisely on a hobby that could have some real productive benefits...be very educational..and then possibly even lead to other opportunities in the future...

I hoped the HVX would be a quality option..at not too ridiculous a price..compared to say things like Varicams etc...which would be ridiculous for me to buy at this point in time!

Thats my thinking anyway..one more day now before I really need to decide...you've got me wavering again!!

Mavoz, believe me there are two cameras that will make you happy: DVX or HVX.
If it was me I would get the DVX. I have one (selling right now BTW) and I have the HVX. We just had a shoot for MTV and used both and the DVX holds up very very nicely in Standard Def. It makes the same colours and image as the HVX. It doesn´t do HD, but for an enthusiast like you it will do better images than you can imagine.

Learn the DVX, make awesome images with it, save money and feel good. If you buy the HVX as a hobby tool you will always have second thoughts. Well, unless 10.000 AUD are easy to spend for you.

The DVX rocks and can be sold in a while for almost the same it is now. Once you are ready to make the step to HD go for it then. You will know the camera already from your DVX experience, P2 will be cheaper. Win-Win situation IMO.

my 2 cents.

P.S.: Of course if you shoot a lot of sports and want variable framerates, there is no choice.

Well...I'm really leaving the decision last...last minute....

Probably put the order in tomorrow morning...with a day of P2 rebate on the shot clock...

Would I be correct in saying that even though I'll probably only use SD initially..another big advantage of the HVX over the DVX is all the options via the frame rates...ie. I could record with the P2..and thus utilise timelapse, slow mo etc. etc...and then just downconvert to SD as needed....

I think it's this frame rate option + p2 advantage..that really appeals to me of the HVX over the DVX...

Ok..about 10 hours to go.... 1 more sleep now...and I can almost hear the groans... "just buy the thing and stop stuffing around!!" lol

Thanks for all the advice and patience here...much appreciated.

Yes, you can do this if you shoot to the P2 cards. Otherwise if you do this on a FS you would have to do it in post.

Yes you could do that. You can record VFR to the card, and downconvert in-camera to the tape, thus having variable-frame-rate DV projects.

Well the order is in...for better or for worse..richer or poorer..a HVX202 is on it's way!!

Thanks again everyone....this DVX community is one of the biggest selling points for the camera IMHO!

Thank you!

You have made an AWESOME purchase. I too went through this decision and decided to get a DVX100b. I shot one short and immediately sold everything I could sell to buy the HVX200. It is just an amazing piece of equipment. The next step for you is to study your brains out with Barry's book. The HVX is absolutely useless unless you know how to use it. Shoot a lot and when you feel comfortable with the settings, framerates, etc, you will make images that freakin rock the world! I love this camera! Congrats!

Ar...nothing like a bit of encouragement when I've just put a reasonable size dent in the bank account!

Thanks mate...I'm looking forward to it arriving....

And the fact that I can use all those variable frame rates and down convert to sd on dv..is a big bonus.

Cheers!
