You guys are making feel like I actually know something... :^)

On that note, I would like to encourage any new users looking to create a business where you can be in control and creative.

For me I was a musician/audio editor and fell into videography and editing. I needed to save money on my own wedding video and hired a cameraman and edited it myself using my audio program Vegas.

I end up mailing out my video to all my family friends as a thank you card (another product I currently sell). For my first piece it cam out great and I had family and friends asking to do their wedding video which I did at the cost of my rental equipment.

Music is an unstable business but I soon realized that there is not shortage of Weddings and family event to make money from. That's why I am not to worried about sharing my knowledge. Infact the biggest issues slowing down video in the wedding market is the lack of knowledge and poor work or everyone would have a video.

Anyway worked with a Really Talented High end wedding production company for awhile and that didn't work out of not fault of mine. But I did learn a lot I figured why limit myself creative, work harder to build someone elses business.

It really didn't take much to make money on my own.

most people who start a business need to take out huge small business loans. Most of my stuff so far has paid for itself, My Day gig paid my usual living expenses and weddings bought my gear. I started off renting almost everything and taking my profits and buy gear and renting less. Before you know it you have a decent amount of gear.

You will be suprized how fast you business can grow if you are smart.

I concentrated my money on the cams studied and made an excellent purchase of the DVX100 because it was my most expensive rental. Now i only rent my battery belts.

But you would laugh if you saw some of my gear. I cut corners on thing like lights. I have bought a couple of Garage repair type dual halogen lights with telescopic stand and cases for $49.00 bucks, removed the grills and painted it black. In the case I carry various bulbs from 100 watts to 500 watt light the podium and head table usually with 100 watt bulb.

My on cam lights are decent Cool lux SL3000 but I might sell these to buy the www.litepanels.com products main reason is less battery draw and adjustable output levels.

Still trying to move ahead instead getting the expensive Video tripods (designed for heavier broadcast cams not dvx100) with the spreader . I just got the cheapest Manfrotto still camera style (no spreader) tripod with a 501 (FX1) and 503 (HD100).

My screen is used $40.00. My projector is used.

My strategy Is/was spend the money on the cams (with good pelican cases to protect that investment) for weddings nothing else is really that important. Wedding don't have other industry guys to impress.

I find that people waste their money hub caps and the decals but I recommend spend you dough on the engine and buy the nice accessories later when the gear pays for itself.

If its not making money, sell it....

There is very few new business that you can startup with such a low investment and evolve on its own like family events. So if you want to be the next movie producer and you don't have the financial backers, start with the basics, wedding and slowly work your way up with hard work. Suddenly you'll find yourself with way more gear and skill on know-how that your movie dream is more reality than dream.
