Wedding videos, how fast with HVX?

Hi,

I recently edited some wedding videos and they took me around 6-7 days to complete. The days including shooting at the wedding, capturing, editing, compositing, dvd authoring and finally creating and printing the dvd insert/dvd label.

Anyways i was wondering if there are any other wedding videographers here that can tell me how long it takes them from start to finish? Also what have u found that speeds up your workflow? And I also should i shoot in HD with the HVX? Or just shoot dv tape? I mean, its gonna be compressed to 720X480 anyways.

Thanks

some companies do it same day, most higher end say 6 weeks usually. so if you're within that you're probably doing good. you'll get faster as you go. especially if you're shooting the wedding, you can shoot to edit and speedy it up for yourself.

i don't care to edit weddings, but i shoot for a couple of different companies. one company does HD, the other doesn't. but usually i'll forget and shoot the SD companies in HD(they don't complain..). but i don't use tape. 1 16gb and 8gb p2 cards and a firestore get me all i need.

If I were sure I only need SD then I would shoot on P2 in DVCPro50. It delivers an SD image quality almost as good as DigiBeta, much better than DV in regards to color and sharpness. Shooting in 720p and then resizing to SD would probably give you the same quality, but it needs twice as much space on your P2 cards and extra work to resize it to SD

you actually get a little more recording time recording 720p 24pn than DVCPro50. DVCPro50 is less compressed than 720p. I'd shoot DVCPro50 unless your client asks for HD. You can save time shooting DVCPro50 or HD when you start to edit simply because it's on P2, you don't have to log and capture your tape in real time.

I shoot for a larger company and they tell me to tell the clients it could take up to 6 weeks.

I think that the bottom line with this type of work, is the bottom line. It's about doing the project in as fast and as well done as you can, without belaboring everything. So that your overall hourly rate is where you want it to be.. and that you've made a profit. Weddings can be a real nightmare when it comes to the editing and the clients expectations. The other big thing that I know that most people do, is to have yoru graphics and your overall structure and such pre-set and determined.. Kind of like an assembly line. Shoot only what you know fits your mold and you'll be good.
