Wedding Video Sample

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Any chance you would be willing to post the .mbl file or even the settings you used for the grad look?  That look is hotness.  :-*

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Hey Spencer great work, very clean and great story telling

Looks like it was shot in a hotel room was this something you abosrbed as a cost or did they pay extra? You said you used squeeze mode- any reason not to use an anamorphic adaptor to save resolution? and also do you come across many requests for widescreen or your broadccast package? Do clients really understand what they are getting when offered these upgrades, it seems it would be a hard sell to the average person the fact you shoot in 24p advanced let alone upgrade to it?

Also if your final output is to dvd why bother in advanced mode I was led to believe it was more used for final output to film. I understand the idea behind the frame blending and loosing some quality but if its not to film why go through those extra steps?

great work!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

I loved the feel, the music and the "performances" of the two people in love. Since you want feedback, the only thing that was a bit much for my personal taste in something as emotional as this was the rapid cutting and the "drunk cameraman" work. I think people should stay away from the pitfalls of MTV (old mannerisms) and think about the truth in the images. Sorry if I sound preachy but this is an open forum for ideas. Its also very cool that you are able to find clients who "get it" when it comes to capturing this precious memories. Good Job Overall!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Contact Therapy - I posted the presets in MB for FC here:

http://www.skstories.com/looksuite_preset.sit.

If you have the regular MB, I can post the settings I used - I assume they're the same? I haven't used the standard version.

Boomerang - I did have to swallow the cost of the room. I'm sure it was a poor business decision, but I couldn't resist the opportunity, since most couples aren't that willing to experiment, and the groom's apartment was less "enticing" than the hotel room. I used squeeze mode, since I don't have an anamorphic adapter. If I did have one, however, I would have used it.

In general, most of the couples I've shot for have been indifferent as to whether the video was shot in widescreen or regular format, much less 24P v 30i (though some people do comment on the strange "movie-like" look of our demos). There have been some people who have requested widescreen, but only 1 person who took interest in what is now called the "broadcast package." Given that no one has asked about it since then, I would definitely call it a hard sell.

Regarding the use of 24PA, it was done to to reduce rendering time in FCP (especially given how slow MB is), to have the ability to store more material on the final DVD, and because it just bothers me at a psychological level knowing that one frame is blended.

LUXGAP - Thanks for your comments - they didn't strike me as preachy at all. Perhaps you're right - sometimes, I find it hard to divorce myself from recent influences and ideas, so I may not be seeing the video as clearly as someone would from the outside.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Awesome work. Your technique is very good and I'm sure your client was blown away by this piece. I hope to see more of your stuff soon.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

that was amazing. i loved it.
i have a question: how did you export it in such great quality but fast dl?

Re: Wedding Video Sample

That was very good! Out here in MI we charge $1500-2000 for love stories like that. Keep up the good work! About the movie like look(Strobing) try shooting 24PA with your shutter @ 1/48 I found Most of my clients perfer it over 1/60 or OFF when shooting @ 24FPS.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Hey Spencer, I was really impressed by your work. The look was great, and it felt like an professional car commercial, extended version :)

My only critique is the beginning - felt there was too much shaky camera work, but, the lighting - o wow i was very impressed with your lighting on the indoor shots - i noticed that you mentioned you had two lighting setups?

Did you mean you have two lights total in the room?

Thanks

Yes, please post the settings. I'm on PC so I couldn't make heads or tails out of that preset file. Thanks for all your help. ;)

Re: Wedding Video Sample

spencer, that is some exceptionally good-looking stuff. great compositions and great use of natural lighting.

one suggestion though... i thought i was watching a jaw-dropping high-end music video until that voice over came in and totally destroyed the mood. the couple knows how they met, and i'm guessing any body at the wedding knows how they met, so why have him say it at all? i thought your visuals alone said everything that needed to be said.

also would be cool if you could post some before/after MB shots.

considering that your clients are willing to pay money for videos made about themselves, for themselves and starring themselves, i'd say $1200 is more than reasonable... your talents are definitely worth it.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Micheal - I used Sorenson Squeeze for the compression at 1000 kbps into a .swf (Flash movie).

Young - Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll probably try to put in a couple more static shots in place of some of the shakier ones. The lighting in the room was done with one light, but depending on the shot, it was either bounced against a wall (in most cases) or shined directly into the guy's face with no diffusion.

Contact Therapy - Here are the settings I used in MB. Hope these are useful!

Pre Saturation: -59
Pre Gamma: -3
Pre Contrast: -10
---
No black or white diffusion
---
Grade: 9
Size: 85
Color: A bright mustard yellow similar to what you see in the sad face icon that they allow you to post on this board.
Highlight Squelch: 15
Fade: 50

The grade, size, and squelch varied from shot to shot, but these were the numbers used on one of them.
---
Warm/Cool: 9.2
Warm/Cool Hue: 0
Post Gamma: 2
Post Contrast: 20
Poast Saturation: 10

lenguyen - Good point. I've been wondering about the approach you mentioned myself. I wish I had a shot of the girl looking at the empty bench and then going back after the guy. This isn't quite true to the real story, but it would provide more continuity. I wasn't sure if it made any sense without something like that, but you're probably right - that most of their friends know their story.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

nice. :)

I usually don't like desaturated images, but for some reason they are really nice here. Nice composition. You're a really good friend.

Couldn't have said it better.
I now have a MB preset called Spencer Custom. ;)

Thanks again, Spencer!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Spencer, excellent job. Great composing, beautiful flow and timing in the edit. I love the way the piece moves. Very trendy and modern. Would you be kind enough to post your in camera settings? I would love to know how you got those "cool" color temperatures.
