Wedding Video Sample

Thought I'd share this with the board as my first posting here. I just finished (well, almost finished) this up for a couple to show before their wedding, and I thought I'd post it. It's encoded in Flash without any player mechanism, so it requires a decent connection. I hope you enjoy! Feedback is always welcome.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

your compostition and film style is very good, I enjoyed it.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

i like this! the story is sweet and so is the track that goes along with it. footage looks fantastic, nice compositions.

i was going to say that i didnt like that her footage was so cold and his was so warm. her footage being cold seems to be a bit harsh for something like this. but now that i look at it again, it totaly needs that contrast to show the 2 people.

good job, cant wait to see more.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Frigging Brilliant.

Was this shot in 24pa? Please share some settings you used, particularly what color correction you used on the Brklyn bridge - that shot looked great.

Tell that dude to cut down on the cigarettes - I know he was nervous but it seemed like he was over the edge :)

The only thing I got a little confused about was first thinking they were off to get married, then off for him to propose, then they were meeting for the first time, and....

Top job, top job!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Thanks for the comments. This was shot with 2 DVX 100As in squeeze mode at the the default settings for setting 6 (24PA). Unfortunately, one of the cameras accidentally slipped to 24P standard for part of the shoot, which has been a bit of an irritation.

Color correction was done in part in the camera by adjusting chroma phase and temp, and partially done within Final Cut using the 3 way color corrector and Magic Bullet. I used the Neo and Berlin settings for the green and blue casts when the color corrector wasn't sufficient. When using Magic Bullet, the default diffusion felt a little strong, so I reduced or removed it most of the time.

Most of the shots of the guy were shot with just a hint of warmth, while the girl was shot with a slight cool tone.

It was hard to let go of the smoking shots (as you can noticed), but I suppose I'll have to reduce it a bit more before his family starts to worry about his health habits! The funny thing is that most of the smoking was actually impromptu.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

This was excellent, Probably the best shot thing I've seen in a long time online. Fantastic, can't wait to see more!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Thanks! Aside from the use of a reflector, the outdoor scenes used natural light. The light quality was a little harder when I was at the water, so I bounced some light back in the faces for a couple of the shots. In the alley scene, I had to wait until late afternoon, when lighting was a little softer - it was too contrasty at first.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

What did you do for lighting? Great composition and lighting.

Can't wait to see more!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

How long did you spend with this couple to film everything? And how long in post to edit? The quality and production is great! What do you charge for somthing like this? I would think this took some time.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

gcaus - For the indoor lighting, I used two set ups. For the guy, I bounced a Lowel Tota Light against a wall in most of the shots, with the exception of the smoking shot, where the light was shined directly into the smoke. For the girl, I used the same light with an umbrella from the front.

veidog - I spent about 5 hours with the couple, which was cutting it close. There are a couple shots I really regret having missed, but as the time dwindled, I had to start winging things. Editing time was probably in the area of 10 hours? Well, getting to the rough cut, was around 6. After that, I started to lose track of time. Total charge for the video was $1,200. Including the time for planning and everything, it probably took at least 25 hours - probably more. Not the most profitable approach, but definitely fun!

Re: Wedding Video Sample

First of all - GREAT stuff! Very impressed. Yes if I wanted to pick it apart I would agree with the smoking and cool-lighting-on-girl comments. But overall, incredible job.

I have to ask, though: You charged $1200 for just this one video? If so, how did you sell it? I think from a producer's standpoint, you got the pricing right. It just seems that clients "not in the know" would consider that steep.

Anyway, great job.

PS - I've been considering getting the MB for Editors package for FCP. Is it worth it?

Thanks,
Chico

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Awesome job.

You already mentioned using the Neo and Berlin(which I love) looks but what Magic Bullet look did you use for the last few shots outside with the grad effect? Or did you create your own custom look? It looks too good to be the Miami one. :p

Re: Wedding Video Sample

I noticed gradient filter on the last few shots by the bridge?? was that done in post or actually used red gradient??

M.

;D ;D ;D ;D BTW THIS IS MY 100th POST - I feel so old ;D ;D ;D ;D

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Chico - We haven't pushed our pre-wedding video services too heavily, so people who have purchased the services have usually had a very specific interest in having it done. When positioning it, we explain that it is a way in which video can enrich the wedding, but, quite frankly, I don't think it's made much of a difference. I think people who have wanted it (not that many - maybe 1 in 10) have really wanted it, and people who have not, have not. The $1,200 hasn't been much of an issue, but I'm in the NY market, where prices run high on everything.

As for MB for FCP, I think it was worth the money. You can often achieve the same through other methods, but MB gives a good amount of control in a quick and easy package. Rendering time is slow, though. I repeat - sloooooww (of course, I'm only using a 1 gig G4)

Contact_Therapy and Michal - The gradient was created in post with MB, but it was a custom gradient. Yeah - the Miami one just doesn't come out quite right, does it?

Re: Wedding Video Sample

that was really impressive.
it totally blew me away.
you're extremely talented.
that's all i had to say.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

that was very good. it was actually very enjoyable to watch, and told the story well. .. had a sort of 24 meets the matrix feel to it. ..anyway , keep up the great work. :)

Re: Wedding Video Sample

damn that was nice. I thought in the beginning a few too many quick cuts, but it didnt continue that way, so it balanced out pretty well. Considering they will most likely show it to their friends over and over again, they will consider the $1200 well spent, I'm sure.

Re: Wedding Video Sample

Thanks for the quick reply spencer. Again, great stuff. I'm really going to have to look at getting that MB for editors. Especially now that I read that the last few shots were done in post?! I thought that was a physical filter. Came out great.

Again, I think you have the pricing about right. Just didn't know how 'popular' that would be. But you're probably right, being in NY would help. I read an article on wedding videography off the cow awhile ago talking about aiming for that 'top 10%' of customers, you know, high-end stuff. I think you're there. Hopefully I will be soon.

Great stuff.

Props,
Chico
