Wedding Montage

I shot a wedding in late January, literally 24 hours after getting my hands on my DVX-100a. I spent all night reading the manual and Barry's book, and fortunately I had already learned some features of the camera from you guys.

Here is the link to the video. They told me they wanted a 15 minute or so montage of their wedding, and they picked out the songs that they wanted on it. They also requested just a few of the preacher's words recorded with the video.

Unfortunately, this church was extremely strict on recording, so I could only stand in one spot for the ceremony, which meant a lot of shots of their backs.

Tear it apart. I need criticism.

Oh, btw. I shot in 60i because our b camera was not capable of progressive. The funny thing is that we didn't end of using much of the b cam footage because its low capabilities were terrible.

Trebax,
As do most first time wedding videographers, you don't have to use the dissolve for every transition. After awhile you get dizzy from it. Use some raw cuts and fades and keep it simple. The beauty and elegance comes from the shot, the framing and the emotion you catch on their face, not the editing. I would use more closeups when possible. Also, I would do a white balance when you get inside. The colors looked off - a little too cool and blue. Good job capturing everything for them and consolidating it to their time requirements. For the most part you had steady shots which is good. Keep it up.

thanks for the reply. I agree with the white balance. It was not until a month or so later that I learned how to use white balance properly, so I tried to cc it as much as possible in post.

I agree with the dissolve transitions. A bit over used. A lot of the shots that I used were very similar (since I could not move positions in the ceremony) so I thought it looked weird with straight shot transitions - almost like the tape skipped or something. Moral of the story - be able to take different angles! :) I hated being in one spot with one decent camera.

OOh noo, I hate doing wedding videos :S

Nice little montage though. as was said, the white balance was a little off, but not too bad.

And yes, it can be a real pain to have a lower quality B camera, or even one of the same quality but of different make. You did a good job of salvaging the good shots from the worse camera.

Nice work!

they always say you can't move here or there. but once it begins, can they really stop you? you could've done better than this. ;)

thanks again for the reply. Yea, once we do a few more jobs, I am hoping to get another dvx for a b camera, not only for weddings but for short films.

Another thing I didn't mention is how crappy the audio is of the preacher. Unfortunately, we were positioned right behind the right speaker of the church, so using an external mic was useless, and it was all flooded and one-sided anyways. Plus, i heard later that the preacher's words were outputted on the same speakers as the band playing, which were on two totally different volume levels. Stinks :(

haha, i suppose i could have ignored the preacher's request, but he reminded me too much of the camerlengo from Angels & Demons, so I was intimidated :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
