Website now up.

Yeah. I would say that in 2008, the dial-uppers are not ones to lower yourself to.

Also, you guys should think of designing for all those people that are still at 640x480 on their 14" monitors. This site would be annoying having to scroll to see it all.

Since notebooks are outselling desktops now, what considerations if any should people have for web design?

I cant find a 2007 figure, but I think 1024x768 is still a strong percentage of display resolutions. That's a decent place to start for design size. 1024x768 was majority back in 2004. I think one can safely assume most displays are larger now.

I just got a new laptop - newer release of same model I had before - and the display resolution is 1280x800. This is a 14" laptop, one of the smallest made. The majority of laptops are 15", so the resolution will be the same or larger.

Dont go crazy, but certainly gear it towards broadband. We work/play in visual medium and that requires bandwidth. Again, I cant find a 2007 figure, but U.S. broadband saturation was just under 75% in 2005.

Now, while it isnt great to alienate 25% of your possible base, I dont think that's really happening. First, two years later, I'm sure saturation has gone up, and second I dont think dial-up is the base for online video media. Sure there are probably plenty of people with dial-up that wish they could jump around YouTube or Stage6 without the wait, but that doesnt mean you cripple your content to cater to those that dont have the technology.

A wedding videographer might miss out on less than 10% of sales because of clients who only have dial-up. I dont think a filmmaker would miss out on any.

However, I always think sites should be as streamlined as possible without bandwidth eating gunk simply for gunk's sake.

Disney requires site designs to be 1024 by 768. When we did the My Disney Points thing, they were pretty stringent about it. I think Disney has a good idea of what correct design size should be as I'm sure they do their research into it.

Were you at Disney recently? Because the point here is that there's been a tilt towards laptops. I'm wondering if Disney had factored that in...

Disney outsources most of their web development and I was at a place where Disney was the main client. It was for DIG - Disney Interactive Group. I was there till last July. I wouldn't necessarily say the discussion is about laptops though. I think that was brought up as a possible scenario, but I think the general discussion is about the site and how it looks for different platforms, Mac, PC, desktops, notebooks.

I think your teleporter malfunctioned. You seem to think you are here:

This is the thread about Como's bitchin' site which became a discussion about design and then design for different access methods, broadband or dial-up, which turned towards display resolution, which prompted me to mention my laptop which has a small screen. This brought up 1024x768 which Tommy mentioned Disney designs for and POOF... here we are.

I vote DevonSloan for moderator. Each thread would consist of only one post...

that'd be great - thread's dont get closed anymore, Devon"TheConsolidator"Sloan just comes through and... uhh... consolidates them... Could save Jarred a bundle on bandwidth...

I was pretty confused as to what thread I was reading, when it got into the laptop discussion haha. Thanks for bringing that back on topic.

Come on! We were lurching towards a discussion of why the BCS is all wrong and USC not LSU deserved the championship. Now you've ruined it! Nice goin'!
