Website launched for short film

I DP'd this short last year and the website just launched. You can download a rough cut from the "download" section. This was the first show I shot with the DVX100A, after coming from a PD150. There's some stuff I like and there's some stuff I hate but just thought I'd share with everyone. It's for an interactive DVD similar to the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books I grew up with. We shot this for nothing and I was learning the DVX as we went along. It was a first-time director so there's a lot of coverage problems, in my opinion, and I hate the first scene in the kitchen. Okay, I'll stop making excuses. Feel free to tear it apart.

Weird...it was cool..and hilarious but the editing was really unusual..i liked it..
the only thing is in a couple of scenes looked very flat with bad lighting...compression?

Re: Website launched for short film

that was uh.. interesting..

pretty much all the editing bothered me... well specifically all the scenes containing dialogue. There is just way way way to many cuts. and I agree the kitchen scene is pretty terrible (editing wise) I wanted the damn camera to stay put for longer that a second..

There was some funny stuff in there though.. I liked the scene with Gary and Maggie...

The opening scene was nicely shot... and the conversation in the car, although it was cut very oddly, had some nice shots.

Did you guys use a car mount to get those shots? or were you towing the car?

As far as lighting and stuff goes, it looked ok to me, but the compression really made it hard to see any fine detail.

my two cents.

Re: Website launched for short film

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you guys thought it was weird, interesting, different, etc. To me, that's better than saying it reminds you of something else you saw. The whole reason I signed onto the project was because I thought it was a crazy idea.

The compression is pretty bad, I don't know what they used. And I agree that there are too many cuts. I don't think this is the final version though. The kitchen scene was a nightmare for me to shoot and light, and I refer to that location as my own personal hell.

The stuff I do like is the scene in the car and the scene in the park. This was a huge departure from my normal lighting because it's a comedy and we decided on a high key look. So I supplemented the flat frontal lighting with subtle kicks and edge lights. The exception being the scene in the restaurant/bar, which has pretty hard top lighting. That scene was tough too because we couldn't actually get into the bar until 2 hours after crew call time, so me and my gaffer had to light all that in half an hour. It sucked because we knew the lighting could be so much better. But hey, you roll with the punches and do the best you can with what you've got.

As for the car scene, we used a car mount and we towed the picture car. I insisted we shoot it this way because I knew it would look so much better than if I shot it from the back seat as the director originally wanted.

Anyway, here are some stills of the car mount:

And here's a frame grab from a more recent shoot where I had more time to light:

Nice shots of the car mounts.  I love seeing behind-the-scenes shots.  As far as the last grab, ...I love seeing those kind of shots too.  :o

Re: Website launched for short film

wow, looks like you guys went all out with the camera rig. Nice!!! Did you use a polarized filter for that car sequence? The website looks nice. I'm still currently downloading the clips right now. I'll get back. good job.

Re: Website launched for short film

That was pretty funny. Is there more, or is that it? I would like to see how some of the other dates ended up.

Also, In the kitchen, was there a TV that was supposed to be playing because the lighting levels kept changing on the shot of him, I thought that there was some wierd compression issue at first. It just kinda threw me off.

Re: Website launched for short film

Amahp: yes, i used a polarizer and i think an ND .3 in the mattebox. that allowed me to dial in just the right amount of reflection on the windshield. i'm pleased with how the car footage came out.

toilet_bob: glad you enjoyed it. it's actually a demo that the producer is shopping around to investors. if they get the money we'll do a much longer version with more choices. as for the varying light levels on the main actor's face in the kitchen, that was due to wind, believe it or not. we had a 6x6 scrim jim outside in the backyard and we were using the silver side to bounce the sun into the kitchen. but the second day of shooting it was really windy and the scrim jim was more like a sail. when i would meter the actor's face i was getting a 3 stop variation in light levels when it was really windy! the whole thing would even blow over in the middle of a scene. it was really frustrating and i kept saying how this wouldn't be an issue had we rented a 4x4 mirror, but the director said not to worry, they would cut around it. well, they didn't, and i cringe whenever i see that scene.

Re: Website launched for short film

I thought some shots were really nice. But ya, the editing was distracting. Soo many cuts willl do that.
I really liked the opening scene. How much did it cost to build that car mount?

Re: Website launched for short film

Where can I get one of those... The brunet in the playboy crop top I mean.

Re: Website launched for short film

that was weird. I liked it.

I really dont understand it though.

I thought the intro and car shots had a really cool 16mm spike jonze raw feel, and Brent Nowak is a talented guy.

yeah his sister is pretty ****in hot. DAMN YOU ENGLAND, SPAWN ME A HOTTIE! I blame the fricking queen.
