Hey,
I want to start a website where i can put all the films i've made and have kinda like an online portfolio. I would also like to buy a .com domain for it so it's easier for people to get to. Where would be a good place to host my site from and buy a domain from? It should be decent speed sinve i will have movie files on it and i dont want my users to have to wait for a long time.
I am also looking for something that won't break the bank, where can you guys suggest!?
Thanks!

I find their online server system to be pretty poor. Bluehost uses Cpanel, which is so much easier to navigate than Godaddy's proprietary one. I had all sorts of issues with godaddy, and the customer service just didn't respond.

Crazy. I guess I haven't used their online server system much. Just ftp everything, and that's about it.

I've used virtuosonetsolutions.com for about 2 years now. Everything has been perfect with them. Even though they take great care of you, they can be a little rough around the edges at times... B&H style. Anyway, great response time and they are constantly upgrading the servers.

I've fought with several webhosts for years until I found this one:

www.1and1.com

their rates are very low (about as low as they get), they provide massive space and excellent service and I've had absolutely no problems with them. I now reccomend them to all my web clients and I have yet to hear a single complaint.

they have by far the best price/pacage deals out there and their systems are easy to use and administer.

Ok. I had never heard of them, but a site I go to that rates their top 10 must have just recently updated. These guys were number 1. I just went with them literally like 1 or 2 weeks ago, but so far everything is great.
I believe the website is www.hostmonster.com
You get 50 gigs of storage and 999gigs of monthly bandwidth. Unlimited email, mysql accounts... all that good stuff.
24/7 live tech support. I found that the night time is a great time to call them. I don't know what their hold times may be like in the day time, but I called them a couple of times one night, and no hold time.
So far it has been great. Everything has worked wonderfully, and there are a host of other programs that they offer. A ton of different phpmysql stuff.
They are less than 5 bucks a month. I think it was like 111 or 118 bucks for 2 years of hosting with them. You also get a free domain name for as long as you host with them, and you can host unlimited domain names under your hosting plan.

I have 3. One for a friend of mine, that I registered for free when I signed up. And my company one that I just started and one for my daughter who is 6 months old. I am just going to use that one for pictures and stuff so her indonesian grandparents can see her grow up during the long spurts of time they don't get to see her. And by the time she is 3 she will probably take it over :)

Anyways, check them out. Like I said, I haven't been using them long, but they have been great so far. Various different methods of tech support, affordable and bunches of space and tons of bandwidth. I mean, a terabyte of bandwidth for less than 5 bucks a month... it doesn't get much better than that.

If you want to play with the big boys, mediatemple.net is where they play.

They just introduced a grid server option. It's 100 gigs of storage. Crazy.

I'll throw in my vote for 1and1.com
A friend has been using them for about 6 years now and still loves it.
I've been with them since earlier this year and couldn't be happier.
I've got a $4.99 "Linux Hosting Home" package. 2 domain names, 100GB of space, 1TB(!) of bandwidth, and more other stuff than you can shake a stick at. They are rock solid - heck, the only server to remain online at full capacity during both Horrorfest and the first RED footage release when other went down or slowed to a crawl.

Or then go with Isara's Bluehost

Hey,
I have a question about 1and1.com, it says the domain name is inculded with the package when you sign up, but after like a year do you have to start paying a yearly fee to keep it? or does it remain free as long as you keep hosting with them?
also, this is a good choice for video files for my films, as i don't want my users to be waiting 20 minutes for a 5 minute file?

Yeah the yearly domain registration fee (note: not for all domains, no .tv etc.. .com .net and so on are included, there's a list.) is included in the montly price. As long as you have the package you get the 2 included domains too - you can ad more domains (for a fee) too if you like.
I've found them prety damn fast - I've never noticed a slowdown on their performance.

For a speed check try downloding a couple of files from: http://dvxuser.mikkowilson.com/horrorfest/ - that's part of my site running on 1and1.
There isn't a dedicated media server (at least not in my package), but they are nice and fast for regular file hosting. I just pulled 3.46MBps for a download on my school's connection, so 1and1 can definatly serve it fast.

- Mikko ... just cancelled his old hosting package earlier today completing his full move to 1and1.

Another vote for Bluehost/Hostmonster (same company, different packages)

I've seen good things from Dreamhost.com as well: 200GB storage & 2TB Bandwidth
