Web Hosting? What do you use?

Hello.

I would like to make a website for my demo work to show future clients and help advertise what I can do.

I know many of you have websites, so I'm just wondering what is best out there?

I will be embedding 640x360 ~30mb H264 .mov files on my site, so I need a fast host so people won't stray away because the video is taking too long to download. I know it is dependent upon their internet speed, but I've been to some websites where their movies loaded very slow.

So what do you use? What do you recommend?

Thanks!

I use 1and1.com - Works great.

Try running a search and you should be able to find lots of discussion on web hosting options. A lot of the threads on this topic are in the Café

hm. for some reason whenever i watch videos on vimeo, the video will stutter. does that happen to anyone else?

unrelated i guess tho, sorry......

the video stutters probably because it needs to buffer more. If you use a lot of tabs like I do, that may also be the problem.

I use mediatemple. It's more expensive but so worth it!

Does anyone have good experience with Network Solutions? And what is a good target range for file size of flv files (576x324)? I have several clips ranging from 30 seconds to 3 minutes and find that optimal quality is hitting around 30mb. Does Network Solutions hold up well for this kind of streaming or would it be better to limit the file size to 10mb?

I have a bunch of clips up on Vimeo and YouTube, however, both services recompress your footage, if you're ok with that, then that might be the way to go, otherwise, the least expensive that I have found is Amazon S3 for hosting big media files. I switched after getting hit with a bill for over $500 for one month of hosting! So here is an example
http://dvcreators.net/podcast.xml - the latest episodes are sitting on the Amazon S3 server. Like this episode http://dve.s3.amazonaws.com/manfrotto420b2_960.m4v

Amazon S3 is not your typical web host as far as how you FTP or upload. I installed the Firefox plug in and just upload through my browser. Here is the plug in http://www.rjonna.com/ext/s3fox.php

If you have high media demands just get your own dedicated server. I pay $85/month, not that bad, and I run quite a few sites off it.

I've been eyeing Yahoo's small business offers for web hosting. At a glance you get:

unlimited disk space, unlimited data transfer, unlimited email.

Anyone out there use this? Seems pretty basic--pick a template, add your text, videos, etc. The price is right, which usually means that you get what you pay for.

Mediatemple looks good too.

Holy crap!

That's crazy. Thanks for the heads-up. I signed up for the Yahoo small biz plan and uploaded a vid. It seems fast so far.

I'm getting about 800KB/sec download speed on this file
