Web Commercial/Short film shot on the AF100

Hey there,
I shot a little web commercial a while back on my AF100. It was very very low budget and super short on time. Like 3-4 hours max at each location! But it was high on enthusiasm and really fun to shoot, and the end result turned out quite good, I thought. I was hoping to show you guys a while ago but it has been on hold for ages due to the client. It now looks like it may never get released so the director has put it on his web site with no linking option :(

Oh well. Here is his site with the imbedded video.
feel free to critique / feedback / comment in any way. Positive or negative I don't mind :)

Great looking piece. Outside the scope of your role, for me it was just too long. I watched it all, I think few others would if they come across it outside this forum.

Yeah Noel, I agree. I think its the result of the client not really making the call as to weather they wanted a short film or a commercial. At one point they wanted it submitted to film festivals as some sort of subversive film/adverisment thing, it was all a bit weird at that point.

Thanks for the complements every one :)
Lighting wise we had so little time that we scouted out the location, decided on 2-4 shots then I made a lighting plan so we could run in, light, fettle a bit then get out asap. It was really good fun. I have a bunch of lights but I can never overstate just how great old beat up Tota lights really are :) We also had an amazing girl called Sam as our art department, she made the production imo.

Any way feel free to keep up the complements, or any questions, my head is getting bigger by the second :)

For the pole dancing security guards (my favorite shot due to challenge) we had a really tiny room with a funny wooden bucket thing in the corner, maybe it was for magazines. I put a tota in it with one of the little tota clamps. (i got a box full of lowel clamps and odds n ends a while back n they are sooo useful) pointing up at the girls with an 800w bulb, un filtered. barndoored off a bit so the light really came from between their legs. (1:45) We were backed into a corner where we were shooting from so I put up a bounce board over my left shoulder and a diffusion frame on the right of camera and hit both with a single Tota (600w bulb) to act as fill and key, both soft. single flag used to control some spill.

Because we had so little room I had the SuitJammas dude move forward and right while i moved back and left. Filled the room with as many peeps as we could and some smoke to add some diffusion and depth and viola :)
Shot in Cine V cause I get happier highlights and watched the red channel, u cant go wrong.

The cookie at 2:00 is just a 2 foot frame with cinefoil cut into strips. I prepared this earlier cause I was going to use it on both bedroom shots. The overall room is lit with a 2k behind a 4x4 foot diffuser and a fair way back. And the tota (600) is hitting the cookie closer up. I used a few flags to control the spill.

My other really enjoyable moments (tell me to shut up as I can all to easily ramble) were these 2... (ps i love my job like a 7 year old loves candy)

Bar scene. We had run out of time and had 25 min to get the shot. It wasn't used in the end but out of sheer speed this was great. I positioned every one as fast as I could then had a 600w Tota unfiltered coming down from the left as a 3/4 back light. Then I put up a 2k as close as I could with out cooking people with a pop out diffuser in front of it. Pump the smoke machine and roll. No time for an eye light was my only gripe. Melted the exit sign over the tota and got kicked out soon after the first take.

The Sushi hero shot was real fun too. There is nothing really complex about it just a tota up behind the bamboo curtain with a half blue on it hitting the food a bit. And my poor cam assist holding a light pannel over head which is daylight temp. Ballanced a bit warmer than daylight. His arms were sore soon after the 3rd take as I kept getting the move wrong :)

Melted the exit sign - still laughing at that one!

Anyway, that was great, and makes me even happier that I bought an AF100 just a couple of weeks ago. Care to say a little about the lenses you used?

Graham, I used the Rokinon 24, 35 & 85. Nikon 50 1.2 and a fair bit of the tamron 17-50 which if you are just a bit off 2.8 is more than sharp enough :)
The AF100 is great. I have had my issues with it but once you get used to it you can really make it work well. I have been thinking about getting another camera for a while but the AF100 just keeps delivering really well and my clients are always blown away. So if it keeps makin the money Ill keep using it. That said the best results I get have been with using the sharp end of the lenses I have. So my Rokinon 1.4 never get used any faster than 2.

Hey that was great! I hear some people saying it was long, but it held my attention, and is a good length for a web promo. Would be really easy to cut down to 30 seconds or so for an ad spot, while keeping the gist. Good work!

I have the same lenses bar the Nikon (waiting on Rokinon/Samyang to release there 50mm Cine), got to love the Tamrons too, I have the 70-200 F2.8 and its probably a little sharper than the 17-50 which I really like using.

You got a great image sir!

Gotta say, you "Tota-lly" nailed the use of the Totas (ha ha!)

Loved the sushi hero, and never fear rambling- a nice breakdown is always helpful!

Great job! It was a fun video and sounds like a kickass shoot.

Nice work even with all the time constraints. Pulled it off really slick in my opinion.
