how much wear & tear am i doing to my VX100A when capturing footage?
should i get a deck(mucho $$$!) or a cheapie camera compatible with FCP HD?
i definitely cant get a deck...
i just hate fast-forwarding and rewinding my camera so much and all the extra wear on the heads...
the VX is a workhorse but all the extra OT is gonna be the death of it!

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

I use a Sony consumer cam I already had. So far no issues doing this. Works fine. The Sony isn't that old though. Good idea to only use Panny tapes in the other cam if you do that.

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

if you can't afford a real deck

I highly recommend you get a cheapie DV camera. Look at the specs closely, very closely.

I use a GR-DV500U ( JVC) with FCP, got this at a discount because it was a store return)  works great and now I have a little cam for trick shots also. The camera sucks in bad lighting though.

I edit A LOT. The camera is on pretty much everyday. and haven't once thought..man, why did I not go with a real deck?  If the little cam craps out NOw, it would still be worth it. I've had it for a year now.

get a DV rewinder, a good one ~$49 and you will be set.

DO NOT USE your DVX as a DECK. hurts to even think about it.

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

..whether im using the little crappo panny cam, or thr DVX (if i have to cause my wifes got the crappo) I just do one capture ofthe whole tape using scene detection, and dlete what i dont want later.. why not? theres plenty of hard drive room to do so.. I couldnt even imagine actually trying to edit off the tape deck rather than just accessing the files for scenes.

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

I bought a Canon ZR-80 for roughly 1/10th the cost I paid for my DVX and I use it as a deck. It works great. And it was about $600 dollars less than the cheapest deck and half the cost of a DVX head replacement, so I figure it's a good investment.

I would not recommend a tape rewinder. I've talked to a lot of videographers and salesmen at places like EVS and a decent tape rewinder simply doesn't exist yet (If I'm wrong about this, I am happy to stand corrected, btw). From everything that I've heard, they all have problems. Either they break quickly or, worse yet, they're really hard on the tape and often damage them -- they just crank full speed until they come to the end when they should slow down towards the end. Keep in mind that you want to rewind and fast-forward all of your archived tapes every six months, so you really need something that is gentle.

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

To keep head wear to a minimum, I never use my DVX for capturing. I have a Panny GS-70 that I use for everyday home video, and also use as a deck. Since a second inexpensive dv cam would be much cheaper than a deck, and cheaper than having your DVX heads replaced, that may be the way to go.....and you'll also have a second less expensive cam to play with! :D

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

wow..i guess i gotta go out and buy another cam...??
more $$..but i guess it'll save my DVX down the road.

No, no, no. A second camera to depreciate on your tax returns. Not only do you use it for transfers, you use it to do the behind-the-scenes filming of your shoots.

Right? :)

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

so if i play my mini DV tape in another camcorder for capturing purposes, and record on that same tape in my DVX, will that be ok on my DVX heads?
will any (residue) get on my DVX heads?
not sure if this question makes any sense.....

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

I am looking for a unit that will do a timecode window burn. The Sony DSR 11 will not. Which of the cameras mentioned in this string will allow a VHS window timecode burn?
Has anyone used the Sony GVD 1000 and will it do a window burn?

Thanks

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

Hi there,
I cant afford a separate camera or deck yet but dont like thrashing my 100.
I capture a tape in one go to avoid the back and forwards of individual scene capture.
Then i use a great little bit of freeware called Scenealyser.
This does scene detect on the big file then slices it into individual shots.
Just need twice the Hard disk space.

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

Another thread (and logic) led me to believe that 1hr capture = 1 hr recording, in terms of head wear. It's not like you're replacing the tape with sandpaper. So someone who never captures but records 20 hrs/week is wearing out the heads twice as fast as someone who records and captures any total of 10 hrs.
I think Steve's approach is reasonable: record once, capture once, and move on to the computer.

Re: wear & tear from capturing...

As others have mentioned in other threads, are there problems with any of these cams not reading timecode from the DVX tapes? IMO that would be a big drawback. Anybody recommend a low cost cam that can read the TC?
