GH3 We produced a short film with the GH3, and here is the result :)

Thanks Dusty, for the time you take.

I see what you mean now. First of all, that 1st screengrab looks indeed way to bright on your screen. I dont know how that's possible, because the other screengrabs look similair to what I'm seeing here.
Can you double check?

For the other screens I agree with the point you're making and that I might be a bit darker. You are overdoing it a bit IMO. Also, because everything that happens is actually 'not real', I like that it feels a bit unnaturally bright and kinda 'too easy'. No daughter would fly in her dad's arms like that if he shows up after years.

BTW, she says 'pap'. Does that not sound similair to English 'pop?' It could be good if the whole world understood that he is indeed her father.

Anyway, good point you're making and I'm considering 'grading it down'. Especially after seeing your 1st screengrab...

To make sure, this is how it looks on my PC... I even turned up maximum brightness / backlight to see how it might look on bright monitors but it doesn't even come close to the frame grab you just posted. This is how it looks in my VLC player atm.

How is it possible yours is so much brighter? :) Can someone else please check how bright this scene looks on their PC?
Please watch the vimeo version for reference if you do. Thanks.

Well, this was off my laptop and Thunderbolt monitor with a perfect monitor profile in sRGB space.

But in the first screen grab, i accidentally exported your version with the lift in the mids I gave for my grade.

Anyway. I like the project and think you did very well. :-)

Just so you don't think you're losing your mind :-)
Yours untouched

Okay, that is a relieve because that looked horrible :)

Thanks again for your comments and your time. Some shots might indeed be darkened a bit and I might do so tomorrow if I still feel the same.

Also I tried to keep the file under 500MB to be able to upload it to Vimeo, so I gave it a bitrate of 9000. This might be a bit low I think now, because of the blocky compression after effects in the blacks where there should be some lovely film grain.

The worst part about film making is that there are always improvements to do, after you think you're done :)

Very nice work.

One nagging questions, though...

Where on earth did you find somebody with an ascot?!?!?

Thanks 1st of all. And haha don't even get me started. I just saw some photo's of the guy and asked him to come in for a day with 'regular looking clothes' and 'to bring an extra set'. He showed up like this, 1 hour late, with no extra set. Horrible.

The only thing I started to like (afterwards), is the huge contrast between the 2 at the scene of the accident.

I was wondering at first if he was supposed to be an angel or something because he was so out of place... never been out of an airport in Europe, but I imagine your local ascoteers don't typically go strolling about country roads.

Angels, however, all wear ascots. Or so I'm told.

lol. That explains it :)

Yea well i loved the look of this, a user said this earlier there lots of junk on here sometimes. not in a bad way... it's just very cool when we get something like this. actually it looked better than the panny financed short.. as that had a video look to it to me but i know what your secret ;) FC.

Would you upload an uncompressed version .. I 'd like to see how the pixels would potentially hold up on the big screen.
cheers

Agree with this. I've all but given up looking at GH2/GH3 videos now.
This held my attention.

Thanks man :)

Yes FC does a good job at making it less 'video-y'... Still I'm highly flattered that you think my short looks better than a financed Philip Bloom short :)
I actually contacted Panasonic (Netherlands) for financing but they have not replied my messages unfortunately. Not to be arrogant in the slightest, but I'm promoting the GH3 + lenses at the moment. Should have aimed at Panasonic International probably.

You can download a better version at vimeo already, with a bitrate of 9500. I might go 'higher' in the future, but Vimeo has an upload limit of 500mb for basic users... I might upgrade in the future.

is FC finalcut?

It's funny because my screen looks identical to dustylens, it appeared to be exposed on the bright side, but after reading your post about how you thought it should be bright makes sense, and again everyone has different ideas about how grades should look.

I think most will understand "pap" is the same as "pop".

Yea i thought it was better but i know what these grain programs can do, and i don't think they were aloud to process their stuff with grain.

one question though, I was wondering about that car... Was it already there and you guys were like "hey lets shoot our short there" or did you finance the car to be tipped over like that?

:) We arranged for the car to be there. I just called some 'car destroyers' (haha dunno the English term for that) and 1 company wanted to do it. They brought the (already damaged) car with a truck in the morning, tipped it over and picked it up at night. Cost some money though, but it really made the film IMO.

FC is FilmConvert. But don't tell anyone, it's our little secret :)

"'Id like to see how the pixels would potentially hold up on the big screen."

The pixels from the 5D have held up to big screen viewing of lots of films.

I've shot projects with the 5D and GH3 and the GH3 looks much better, as pixels go, (not as an overall IQ judgement.)

Ironically my most recent film, an 8 minute short, was shot with both of those cameras and is being premiered at the cinema this Friday.

It will be my first chance to see both cameras on a big screen with an audience and I know they won't know the difference
