For the last month I have been working on this short film and now it is finished. We shot the film over 2.5 days. The camera used is the GH3.

Of course I would like to get feedback and hear what you think of it, but it might also be interesting for you guys to see what this camera is capable of in a production.

Logline:
'After the alcoholic Simon survives a dangerous car accident, it is finally time to change his life.'
The language spoken is Dutch, but since there are only like 5 words in the whole film, it should be no problem to understand what's going on :)

I will answer any questions you might have regarding the production, workflow or post production. And of course all other comments are very welcome.

(needless to say, watch in 1080p)

Enjoy watching!
Cheers.

Loved that. Great work.
Made me forget about the GH3, lenses etc - concentrated on the story instead.
Really impressed. You got great performances out of them.

Only suggestion would be that at around 2.23 it's a bit of a jump cut. I'd have cut to an exterior shot of the landscape, or an extreme close up of the drink etc.
But that's just me.

Great stuff! Really like your style

Very solid storytelling. I'm looking to buy a GH3 for indie narrative work and have a couple of questions.

1) What did you record sound on? Internal, external, pre-amp, etc.

2) Which lenses did you use and what was your preferred method for pulling focus?

Thanks in advance.

Mooi werk, vind het ook een goede color grading. Ik ben ook wel benieuwd wat je hebt gebruikt voor geluidsopname dat staat niet in de omschrijving.

Cheers

Very nice! Some of the angles of your shots were great....I can see how the GH3 helped to achieve them. Particularly the first person perspective after the accident and the reverse shot of him from the front door while visiting the femal lead.

Not too shabby. I quickly lose interest in a lot of these GH user films. Yours held my interest all the way to the end. Any criticisms I have would be very minor, and based more on my personal tastes than anything substantial.

The only one I will offer up is the title. Somehow it just doesn't seem to fit. I might suggest something more enigmatic, something that only makes sense once you do see the ending. It'll give the piece more mystique.

Thanks all for the great comments. I was afraid that the film couldn't 'deliver' the story, but your comments made me very happy and reassured it does. It's hard to look objective at your own film after a while, because I have seen the footage so many times.

Answers at some questions:

- Sound was recorded on a Sennheiser directional mic (dunno which type) in a zoom H4N.
- Manual focus pulling was used in the dolly / slider shots. For other shots, I used the autofocus single focus to put the focus on the actor.
- Footage is graded with Premiere's color correction and then ran through FilmConvert.
- Indeed shot in 24p. Although some shots were shot at 30p and then slowed down for a minimal slow motion effect.

Thanks again for all the kind words. You probably all know its hard to look at your own films and realize what they're worth. The best compliment for me is that some of you commented on the story only, and not even on the GH3's capabillities.
Keep 'em coming :)

Thoughtful and thought provoking. The kind of film I would want to watch again (and did as soon as it finished). Ultimately talent and skill is more important than the make/model of camera. I look forward to more productions. :)

cheers

Thanks! You mean literally, less grading?
No, I mean a heavier look. Grade it a bit darker. I like all the shots and the angles. The story is king. But it's a somber piece and needs a grade to convey it so it hits the viewer harder. Other than that, being my opinion, the short is very well done.

Thanks man.
I have 2 IPS monitors here, both of different type and it's kinda hard for me to see how most people see it :)

1 of my monitors is extremely bright at 100% brightness and I figured that most people see the footage darker than I do so that I don't want to take the risk that it gets too dark. I dunno, I have to see it on more screens I guess. You are right about that it should look a bit dark. On my darker monitor it does look better.

What screen / settings are you watching it?

I hope you don't mind, but I downloaded the short and tossed it into my NLE. Just put a quick grade on it of how "I" would have like to see it. (Very subjective as everyone has different tastes.

But here is why and what I thought while watching it the first time. I thought the graveyard scene was too bright. I thought the same of the the scene where the man meets his daughter (I assume daughter). Just a bit too bright for such a gloomy story or topic. SO while the story sucked me in, the images didn't line up with the mood for me.

So here are my quick grades. Grabs are yours first, mine second.

Again, it's just my opinion and there are times I won't give myself a penny for my thoughts.
