Watch Nomadland on Hulu

Hello All,

I watch a lot of junk films on Hulu, Peacock, and Tubi, often wondering how they got there and why anyone bothered to produce it.
I recently watched Nomadland, which I somewhat enjoyed; however, I found it slow without much of an end goal, so I feel a little robbed.
It was more shocking to me because it was nominated for an Oscar, and its cost was five million. I'm a little floored by this; what am
I missing here? Have Oscars become worthless like the Noble Peace Prize?

It's an unusual year with a paucity of nominees. Nomadland is a good film (not great), I saw it at TIFF, but in any other year, at most it would have won Best Picture at the Independent spirit awards.

Five million on what? I've done a few film budgets and I just can't see it.

Can't really speak to the budget or even what the value is of a Nobel Prize. (I didn't even know they were worthless?)

But I enjoyed Nomadland, if anything - it was nice to have a quiet film amongst all the superhero and IP stuff that's been getting most of the headlines. Also, with regard to the point about less films getting released last year because of the pandemic, are there other films that got postponed that would've nudged Nomadland out? It did seem like an Oscar nominee, though. Film that are introspective (ie. slow and not much plot) do tend to get recognized. I did appreciate how the director integrated the real life nomads (non-actors) into the narrative and Chloe Zhao is being recognized for that.

I just watched it. Didn't know the director was the same director as The Rider, which I thought was great. I love McDormand as an actress but felt the director should have used a non-actor for the lead role in Nomadland. Of course with a non-actor, the film wouldn't have won all the Oscars it did. And the director's next film would not have been a film for Marvel. I hear those kidney-shaped swimming pools in Hollywood come at a price.

While I enjoyed Nomadland (and thought it got better on reflection) I was really disappointed that First Cow wasn't nominated for anything. I know the Oscars are a joke but that seemed like a terrible oversight.

Wow, I've been out of the loop - did not know the director had a new film - I like her work. First cow. I wonder what her second favorite title was. Titles are tricky.

The Oscars are so political it isn't funny.

I'll have to check out First Cow.

I thought First Cow was excellent, and if you like Kelly Reichardt's work it is absolutely worth seeing. It's also got some beautiful cinematography by Christopher Blauvelt (and I'd recommend this interview with him: http://sadhillmedia.com/filmformally/2020/5/3/episode-15-christopher-blauvelt).

But yes, the Oscars are laughably political at this point (and corporate, etc.). It makes it that much more surprising when they seem to get things right, as I thought they did with Moonlight a few years back.

Maybe I'm wrong and correct me, but in the last years I observed that, unfortunately, "mediocrity" wins, and true, genius talent is dismissed. that's the same in the music industry, art, filming etc.. the "industry" has been "politically corrupted", giving the highest prices to those who truly does not "deserve" it. I'm not saying that it is always that case. But there is a tendency in that direction. as if they were following a hidden, "political agenda", giving money to those who subconsciously or unknowingly "step" into their vision of their agendas.
