Washed Out Windows

How do I prevent the following to happen? I'm shooting with a Canon t2i. When shooting indoors and the camera is aimed at a window and outside the window gets completely washed out

I use rolls of 48" wide Lee ND gel which I bring in from Film Tools in LA. Their number 211 is .9ND which will take the windows down about three stops but you can get it in .3, .6 and 1.2 grades as well (each .3 is a stop). You can cut it to size for just about any window and apply it by putting a single drop of dish soap into a bucket of water and apply it with a squeegee or some people use tape so they can reuse it.

Some options come to mind. First, keep the windows out of your shots. Second, gel the windows down to match your interior light levels as Mr. Bowman suggests. Third, light your interior subjects to match the levels from the windows. This last option will take a lot of lighting, but if you have a huge bank of windows to deal with it might make some level of sense.

either get the windows out of the shot...or expose for the windows and light the interior to match (lots of light).
