The last big project that I shot was the feature Leap: Rise of the Beast, which we filmed in the summer of 2010. Last September, I shot and starred in a trailer for a friend's first feature. The best part about that was the quick turn around time. It reminded me of the short films I used to make where you film for a day or two and then a week later the movie is finished. The last short film I shot was in 2006. Lately I've been itching to go shoot something again. I have a script ready for Leap: Revelation, but it's epic and not doable at this point. There was also Derek, my supernatural Bible thriller, but again, it's big and I don't have the time at the moment to do another feature right now. So, I decided to do a short for the first time in seven years.
Doing three feature films has really taught me a lot and helped me to grow as a filmmaker, so I'm looking forward to applying what I've learned to the short. My goals are simple. I want to make a short film at the quality level that Leap 3 will be at. It needs to challenge me as a director, cinematographer and effects artist, but still be simple enough to pull off fairly quickly. After tossing around a few ideas, I came up with something that I'm completely in love with: A survival film set in the world and time of Leap: Revelation.
Why a survival film? Over the past four years I've been shooting a web series in the vein of "Survivorman" where I go out alone with a few cameras and showcase different skills. The series is starting to pick up a bit on youtube with a small but loyal fanbase, so bringing survival into a narrative seems like a smart way to get views. I've also been wanting to do a survival film for sometime, but never had a story to tie it all together until now.
The name "Warrior's Heart" is a title I came up with in 2009 and is something I've been itching to use. The film is relatively silent, in that you have an actress alone in the wilderness with no one to talk to. The film will star my friend Ariel A. Cansino (the very talented great niece of Rita Hayworth) who also starred in my first feature, Wulf. We've been trying to do another project for years but could never seem to coordinate our schedules. She has become a Christian too since our horror film so she has no problem with the inevitable religious tones that are to be found a movie taking place in the Leap universe.
I'm currently pounding out the short script right now, and we hope to shoot in two or three weeks. I can't wait!
